Wasn't having a go at you, I basically agree. I just like to tag trundler whenever someone uses the word weakness ever since he somehow successfully trolled NZers with the most obviously rancid bait ever.
Haha I know you weren't. I just felt like saying why.

Waugh did have great innings, probably more of them than Pujara, but just didn't deliver enough outside of them. He seemed content to do enough to help his team and keep his average healthy but lacked the mentality to become properly top-tier. Maybe he would've in today's climate, but that's merely a matter of conjecture.

Pujara at least had genuine ATG series, and was seriously lethal for a period there. He's fallen away pretty hard but he did clearly have the better career unless you count ODI's.

No excuse of course but yeah Waugh was probably just lazy after being part of such a dominant team. Didn’t have Steve’s mentality sadly.

Pujara has the weirdest away record. Pretty woeful averages away from home but we don't win either of the two series in Australia without him and the few runs he's actually gotten in other places have been very high quality. His one ton in England was a classic.

Waugh had a game that translated way better to away conditions.

He averaged 49 in wins and 28 in losses. It's not like he stood up when he thought the team needed him more.

He was also one of the most dominant county batsmen of all time, so it's not like he cbf grinding crap bowling into the dust.

I think it was just a bit of an illusion. "He looked better than he was" is the most likely explanation for all this IMO.

That's interesting, and a little surprising. I suppose there might also the possibility that the winning average of 49 was him stepping up when needed because he turned some potential losses into wins? I'll admit I'm thinking specifically of his 116 in Gqeberha (yes, I had to look up the exact spelling because shamefully I've still not learned it) in 1997. But there were probably others.

Yeah. Very inconsistent overall (Australia 2014 was a big miss) but his top five hundreds away from home is very good.

Made a brilliant 150 odd against a high quality SA attack on his first tour there too. An obvious theme through most of these away runs is that those pitches were relatively slow, if not necessarily always easy to bat on.
Yeah has a great ton in SA and a great ton in England. Dominated in SL too. WI was the big miss as he's had it pretty tough in NZ. Even in Australia his runs have tended to come on the slower pitches. Great record at Sydney. Bounce fundamentally troubles him more than movement imo despite doing better in Australia than England.

I mean yeah - looked better than he was is right on the money and pretty techniques are always overrated.
