Comparison between the Poll of Polls and CW's own Top 100 from earlier this year. CW ranking shown after cricketer's name. Differences of ten or more places in colour. Blue when CW has "underrated" the player compared with the Polls. Red when CW has "overrated".

83 names are the same. Ten of the 17 differences are current or recently retired players included by CW who would not have been around when some of the polls were conducted. Cricketers left out by CW are marked Omitted in bold. Those included by CW but not the Poll of Polls are at the bottom in red type.

Grimmett not making the Poll of Polls is the biggest shocker from the omitted list, followed by Faulkner, Kanhai, Hill and Nourse

My mistake. Grimmett was in both lists. Now corrected.

Those omitted from both lists include Macartney, CTB Turner, Trumble, Tom Richardson and Tayfield. With Australia having generally produced the best wicket-keepers, Blackham and Oldfield might also have been hard done by, not to mention Tallon.

Both selections include only five Pakistanis which doesn't seem enough. During Pakistan's first Test victories against India and England Fazal took twelve wickets in each match. When Australia were beaten at the first time of asking he took thirteen. Then eight when West Indies were first defeated.

Pre-1914 cricketers are under-represented in both lists.

There seems to be an impression that cricket became professionalised relatively recently. That was certainly not the case in England.

Throughout most of the eighteenth century men were being paid to play cricket, and during the nineteenth most English cricketers were professionals. By the end of the century the going rate in today's money was £27K for a summer's work plus travel expenses and performance bonuses. A tour in the winter paid £20K. Many made a lot more. All figures in today's money equivalent.

WG Grace was nominally an amateur, entitled only to expenses. Yet he made well over £1 million from the game and once turned down £165K for a single tour to Australia. Walter Read, also an amateur, received £110K for one tour there. Shrewsbury was offered £115K per annum to move to Australia and play cricket. "All you have to do is bat Arthur" they told him. He declined the offer. Bobby Abel was paid £110K for a winter's assignment coaching Parsee cricketers in India. Sussex paid Alfred Shaw £40K per year to coach their colts.

Alec Watson was a Lancashire slow bowler never picked for England. His benefit yielded £130K, George Ulyett's £110K.

In 1888 George Lohmann was said to be receiving the annual salary of an ambassador. That would have been at least £150K, probably more. In America the top baseball players could earn as much as £500K per year.

T.G. Evans is rated very highly as a Keeper. (only behind Gilchrist, Sangakkara, Knott and Walcott)

And Graham Gooch appears in 8 of the 15 list, which is impressive as some of the lists are top 50 lists; one being top 20. Any particular reason he was rated that high?

How are these lists?
Guess I'm gonna include these ones.
