The game starts with both teams going one on one all over the ground. Some of the key matchups include Darren Murphy in the goal square, minded by Michael, Blackman against Voss, Borcich on Black and Richards on Power. Out of form Deja Moo is pitted against the under done Brown, in what could prove to be the most pivotal matchup, while James Stedman will do his best to curb Akermanis' influence.
Nathan Patrick starts the game off with a powerful punch that moves the ball all the way into the TF forward 50. But Chris Johnson read it well, and was able to run out back out. He spotted Akermanis on the wing, who found space and runs right into the Lion's forward 50. With plenty of time to settle, Aker pumps it through for the first goal of the match, and a great start for the Lions. The rest of the quarter didn't reach any great heights, until the last 30 seconds, when some flashy play by Andrew Cameron was outdone by an absolute speccie by Dylan Jellet in the goal square. Jellet popped it through, and the teams went into their huddles with the scores locked at 3 goals apiece.
The second quarter was one way traffic, the TF'ers kicking 7 goals to 2. Trent Ponting and Borcich got plenty of the ball, but the real star was Andy Cameron. Showing the public just how good he is, Cameron did something special everytime he got the ball. He set up 3 goals, while kicked 2 of his own. Debutants Kenny Dobson and Burke showed promise and Patrick was still on top in the ruck. In the perfect conditions, the Brisbane midfield was unable to get clean possession, and Brisbane went into the rooms five goals behind.
In the third quarter the Lions turned back the clock and played with the aggression and passion that won them three premierships in a row. The two players the TF'ers didn't want to get on top, Brown and Akermanis, lit up, and caused havoc. Akermanis slaughtered Stedman, forcing Blackman to switch Dobson onto him. Akermanis and Brown both kicked 3 goals for the quarter, and the Walruses had no answer. Bradshaw started leading Edmunds to the ball, and the Lions looked like pulling away after getting infront at the half way mark of the quarter. But vice captain Dave Richards got the TF back into the game, with his trademark brilliant disposal and clever play. Andy Cameron and Trent Ponting continued their great first half form, but the quarter was comfortably won by the Lions.
The last quarter was turned into a scrappy affair, after the Lions kicked the first two goals, and decided to defend the rest of the game out. This tactic frustrated the Walruses, and too many silly frees were givin away. Cameron nearly got the TF back into the game, but one man's efforts are never enough, and the Lions pulled off a good win. While too many players underformed for the Walruses, good signs were aplenty. Cameron had a brilliant game, David Kennett had a decent debut, as did Burke, and Bennet finished the game off well. The Lions showed ominous form in the third quarter, but the rest of their game was dull and well off the level of a premiership contender.
