Likely quarter final match ups

Don't know what will be better for Ireland, batting first or fielding first. On one hand it seems like they should field first given their average bowling and back themselves to chase around 300 as they did against WI. On the other hand, seeing how weak Pakistan is when chasing totals, it might not be a bad idea to put 280 or so on board and then put Pakistan batting under pressure.

Just looking back at all the upsets affected by Ireland since 2007, they have all come fielding first. So may be at the end they should just field first.

(NZ/WI) vs. (Saf/SL)
I don't know which one I'd prefer, assuming we get to the semi-final. If SA make it to the semis it would mean they've shaken their World Cup knockout games hoodoo, albeit only once, which means the dreaded C word may be no longer an issue. But on the other hand SL keep beating us in World Cup semis.

I'd take South Africa because I'd rather they win if we don't. Reckon India are favourites at the moment, they're slowly dominating sides and Kohli and Dhoni haven't been needed to win any matches yet.

What are the chances of West Indies' last match being washed out and them missing the knockouts? Quick look at the forecast suggests nothing but rain.

Would much prefer Sri Lanka - we've had the wood over them in the last few months, and at home I'd back us to beat them 3 times out of 4. South Africa - even in fairly mediocre form - will offer a serious test of our batting and a match against them will be even money at best imo.

Needed Dhoni for WI game, but I take your point.

India are 4th fav with the bookies incredibly, but they have the most winnable quarter final.

I think SA might C against SL especially if SA bat second, a favoured team vs an experienced side slowly buidling momentum (and better than Pakistan) and we should be fine against the weakened SL bowling if we meet them in the semis, I'd prefer India over AUS cuz of Starc, but India's crowd factor is an issue but won't be as much if So/Bo/V fires up and BMac tells the crowd to sit down when he bats.

Seems almost certain now that the qf matchups will be:
India v Bangerz
South Africa v Sri Lanka
Australia v Pakistan
NZ v WI

I'm somewhat nervous about having WI, as there's always the outside chance that Gayle could go beserk and take the game away from us. But really - on form - NZ should be ashamed if they don't win comfortably, and I'd rather we play WI than Ireland because I don't want us going into a semi-final probably against South Africa without having faced any testing fast bowling in a month.
Gayle is totally past it against quality fast bowling with not last 5 overs vs you lot though you have to be careful of their lower order hitters can go beserk on their day.

I've decided I don't really care whether it's SA or SL assuming NZ get to the semis. At that stage it should be a tough match regardless & If we lose, we don't deserve to progress.

I do feel it will be SL though, they seem to have this crazy edge over SA, saying nothing of SA's propensity to 'you know what' in knockout games.

based on current standings and results, is there a possibility that rsa will face aus in semis ? assuming ind/ban, nz/wi, aus/pak, sl/rsa line up in querters

So what about Semi Final match ups? Seems a bit confusing and going by the betting sites the co-hosts will face off in final if they win their knock out games.

If India plays Australia in semifinal that will be similar to 2011 quarter-final but with exactly reversed roles (defending champion vs host-***-favorite)

That's the match of the tournament for me.

Or we could have another India-Pak semi final which would be favourable for Indian fans all around the world =)

Yes, the semifinal involving India will be epic with any one of these 2 opponents. (assuming we don't lose to Bangladesh)

There is a reasonable chance that India play Sri Lanka in quarters. BD has to beat NZ for that. It will be most hilarious it SA choke against BD in that scenario.

yeah, it would terrible for the pakistanis. Losing twice to India in the same tournament. I shudder to think about it.

Funnily enough the only time Pakistan have looked like they might be in with a chance has been the only time that Pakistan batted first (i.e. 2003). ALL the other times they have lost the toss against India in world cup matches. If India and Pak meet again and Dhoni has his customary luck in calling, I can see Pakistan losing the match as soon as the toss is done.
