So Mervyn Dhillon is back after a long period of wildnerness ^^^ Golden advice from Daemon :laugh::laugh:

yes, quite right; a period of time during which I completed my degree, started a new job, got married and became a Muslim. Apologies for not being around to listen to everyone's really good jokes :)

Why Pankaj, Shukla, Vijay, Bipul, Mahesh, Luv, Jaffer in their respective formats? Actually, why them altogether?
This was suggested largely on domestic experience and achievements. Besides, the lesser options have been italicised, to indicate they're better off as reserves.
  • Pankaj is very strong and fit, and can be adjusted to bowl at higher speeds than he is at present, and he's also very useful when not bowling. Not so useful in shorter forms of the game, though.
  • Shukla is the single best OD batting all-rounder bowling seam-up in the country. Check his domestic OD profile for proof. Should be playing, especially with Irfan Pathan out of contention.
  • Vijay's had a good record in the IPL and is one of the few T20 centurions in India- Gautam Gambhir has still not scored a century, nor has Yuvraj- unless we see more three-figure knocks in domestic T20.
  • Bipul Sharma is a very impressive utility player in Indian OD and T20 games, and his figures show- he can go the long haul as a batsman or spinner, given a chance- like all the chances Jadeja has got.
  • Luv Ablish is the single best seam-up bowler in T20s in India. Check his domestic T20 figures for proof. Likewise the other three names you find odd.
  • Go for the experienced hand, hence Jaffer is in, at least as a reserve.
These players (except Vijay) may not have high-profile IPL contracts, support of powerful administrators, names to pronounce easily or lots of Facebook likes, but they do well for their state and zonal teams in Indian domestic cricket, and that matters.

Pankaj Singh, guy has potential, in the Mcgrath/asif mould- he should be given a try for tests

Love Ablish- definitely should play t20i for india, bowlers like zaheer and ishant who just bowl length (which is correct for test cricket) just get trashed everywhere in t20; this guy has so many dirty variations

Vijay- one of the most attractive players in indian cricket- t20 messed him up; used to love watching him bat, still have hope for him

Bipul Sharma- player with good potential, but jadeja younger and better fielder hence preferred.

Pankaj Singh- Needs to develop as a tearaway pacer or all-rounder in the Stuart Broad mould. He has the raw material for it.

Vijay- One batsman too many in the fray, and may be best used largely as a T20I specialist, when Sehwag isn't available. T20 may be the best for him.

Luv Ablish- Hasn't been tested in the IPL. Two poor overs and Preity/Ness kept him out of the loop in the IPL, never to get him back. Disappointing.

Bipul- Not a poor fielder, while Jadeja isn't very great on the field either. Built like Gayle or Oram, and a similar player. Can't be too wroug on that. The selectors and their youth bias...

Thank you for your detailed response. Allow me to ask you a simple question-

"Do you realistically forsee a chance for any of these players, apart from (maybe) Vijay to make it to the Indian team(s)?

Looking at many of the suggestions that have been made by other forum members on other posts, it seems that now is the time to implement the changes I mentioned in my opening post.
