let’s remember some guys

Jaques is a great "what if" story. The back injury he had and the surgery to fix it basically ruined his career. I remember him taking apart a young Dale Steyn in one of the winter ODIs played at Docklands in the mid-late 2000s and he looked every inch a bloke who would be a prodigious international player for years.

I wish he was around in his pomp now. He'd be a stand out opener in the context of what's around in Australia atm.
Could have played for England in early 00s. Credit to him for saying no, but probably should have said yes as he'd have managed maybe 50 or so tests before the back became an issue

Even before his injuries he seemed to not be rated by the selectors. Katich was preferred over him for the opening spot when Hayden returned from injury in the 08/09 summer which was pretty harsh.

Yeah particularly heading into the 09 Ashes. He had a very good County record iirc, though I can't recall if he then got injured again and would have missed the tour anyway. Certainly a missed opportunity given how fragile a lot of our batting was in the late 2000s and into the 2010s.

Wasn't he the youngest ever Aus test skipper? I think he was labeled the next Bradman at some point, a common curse. I wonder how he would have turned out if he'd not been pushed into skippering so young.

I feel like he would have been a handy player in a lot of sides playing as an allrounder in the sc where you might drop a quick and want to strengthen your batting while playing two spinners
I don't recall Nash ever bowling spin. I saw him bowl some ordinary left arm mediums a few times though. No one ever accused him of being an all-rounder in his days playing for Queensland either

The thing about Phil Jaques is he became really good very, very suddenly around 2004-ish. Before that he was not even first-class standard. Even without Hayden/Langer keeping him out he only had a very short window of being an elite international cricketer IIRC

Yeah Duminy is probably one of the most talked about RSA players on these boards in match and selection threads, the conversation often being what to do with him as much as anything else. He was an all-formats player for years who had a bunch of different roles too.

Sorry, I meant you could play him as a seamer on those rubbish SC decks to take the shine off the ball so you could pick an extra spinner.

Abid Ali turned out to be a guy.

England seem to produce a great many pacers who fit the mould. Every summer they roll out a fast medium bowler who does a 6/10 job at home after someone is rested/injured.

Yes the youngest ever skipper and my po, started to believe in his own publicity causing to lose sight of his role as skip/batsman
