No the batting has to be close enough.

Let me put it to you this way, which country do you see Lara/Ambrose outperforming Ponting/McGrath?
WI, ENG, Asia and SA can go either way. Ambrose ofc doesn't play much in Asia so it's hard to say but McGrath got a bit neutralized there. And Lara has a big edge there over Ponting.

Yeah I see the Aussies outperforming in almost all places except maybe England and WI.

A coat of varnish separates Ambrose from McGrath but there's a bigger gap imo, between Ponting and Lara generally. Had it been Mcgrath/Smith I'd give the Aussies the edge. Aside from Bradman, he's about the only batsman better than Lara.

By country McGrath and Ambrose are even in England, Ambrose wins in WI, Pak and Australia. McGrath wins in India and SL is completely speculative. South Africa i feel, that had Ambrose played there at remotely full fitness he'd have gone bananas. Even with all that, his record there compares favorably with McGrath.

Ponting and Lara on face value seem close away but that's only because Ponting has many more n/o than Lara does. Away Lara actually scores 47 rpi to Ricky's 43. I would however give Ponting the edge in NZ, Australia and RSA. The rest to Lara including India because lara would probably suck there as well but not to the extent as Ponting.

So overall Ambrose/Lara > McGrath/Ponting.

Individually I'd rate the players in the following order. McGrath > Lara > Ambrose > Ponting.

The value that McGrath adds to an average side is going to open doors for more victories as compared to Lara/Ambrose combo.

Lara will help fetch more draws than wins and play some stand out knocks but McGrath has the killer instinct that is going to make things comparatively easier for Ponting and co. as batters to get the job done.

This is totally wrong.

McGrath has a notable gap on Ambrose. The only place Ambrose has any advantage over McGrath is Aus.

Ponting when you look at the series he played is equal to Lara in England too IMO. So basically Lara is better in India and SL and in WI.

Yeah, Ambrose pre surgery was the equal to of not McGrath's superior.

Career overall, McGrath just a touch above.
