Kippax's Firebirds and Wellington Club Cricket Thread

Just on English pitches and better bounce, it's too early and cold to get any reverse-cupped bounce into too many of them. Still dipping under zero at night and not getting above 10 in the middle of the afternoon for this match in particular.

playing against terrible medium pacers with the cheat ball could go both ways for young - pretty hard to trust your leave when it moves that much (and young needs his fantastic judgement back) but could also tighten him up to the inswinger.

as usual kippax's attempted psycho-analysis and fawning over the upbringing of someone from a culture known to produce a few too many deeply socially conservative faux macho jesus lovers is more fantastical than the 'james anderson is an atg' brigade.

Oh I doubt Young will ever fire a big shot across the bows of those arrogant South African-born threats. He'll look quite organised and cute and then surrender meekly and quietly, most times.

Essex will get Harmer on as early as the 16th over in April because he's the complete opposite of Young's personality, really. A superior 'big man on campus' who thinks he might just be the best off-spinner in the world, if some country's administrators out there would just let him prove this.

Still, Harmer has clearly hankered for bigger challenges. In 2019, four years on from the last of his five Tests for South Africa, the frustrations of his ceiling as a Kolpak player were clear when speaking to Wisden Cricket Monthly. “As far as I’m concerned, I’m the best off-spinner in the world,” he said. “But how can I say that when I’m not competing against the best batters in the world?…That’s who I want to be, but I can’t truly say that until I’ve played 60 Tests.”
Fair play to Harmer, he's actually quite good. He did turn some of the balls square. It didn't look like a dry surface but still did turn. I don't know about the best offie but he can bowl all right.

I didn't know he played for SA. He's played 5 test with good returns. He has a lot of wickets in England. Probably still has a chance to make the squad if Bess is not going to be delivering as much as he has promised. Scratch that... just realized he's now playing as an overseas professional. He's also back playing in South Africa. The kolpak is confusing as they come. He had signed the kolpak but not anymore.

Young's classic forward-and-across foot leaves him in a feeble position to deal with a full outswinger tonight. Out for 1.

First thing I checked today was his score. Probably not enough intent going forward. Struck in the crease a bit.

It's not just the swing with Dukes, the pronounced seam moves off the deck and lot quicker after pitching than a kookaburra ball. If you get forward you have to truly commit to getting forward. The decks are way better for batting in UK but does require tight technique and in particular on the front foot. Going to be quite challenging not just for Young but for the likes of Nicholls and Blundell as well.

Not very fruitful knock for Young. The bowlers look like club cricketers. Barely any pace at all... Watched every ball of Young's inning. Many balls didn't even carry to the keeper knee high. The keeper should have stood up. Maybe it's the youtube or camera angle but bowling looks below par. Young must be having hard time adjusting to the slowness and low bounce.

Even at home he's one of the worst handlers of movement (coming down at gentle Sean Solia pace) for a 40+ averager I've ever seen.

Young 45* vs. Warwickshire, although gave a chance I saw at third slip on 5.

Even though the bowling is a gentle pace he's finding he can't get his pull shots timed when they've dropped short at all, with the more inconsistent bounce compared to home. Yanking the bottom hand away after getting hit on the glove a lot, as can be the case with Young at any venue when he's not feeling like he could time an attempted pull.

Young 19 away from a ton.

I really need to throw these harsh and fierce spotlights on NZ batsmen in this Kippax thread more often. They all seem to knuckle down and do something. Well, as best as they're able to, anyway.

it's almost like he's a good player starting to get used to the very different and frankly far from test cricket english domestic conditions, and not whatever tired stereotype, pop psychology or conspiracy theory you're peddling to disparage anyone new zealand born who makes the wider squad while conway is yet to bring up his first few test tons.

Oh he's still batted extremely unconvincingly in this knock. Good tenacity, that's about it.
