Kevin Pietersen Vs Abraham De Villiers - Who's better in tests?

I'm a better batsman than Bradman right now - but again, THAT IS NOT THE QUESTION OF THE THREAD!

It is "Who's better in tests?"

And, again, it's fairly clear the answer is Kevin Pieterson.
Who wasn't one of the available options.

Pietersen....But AB is making up some serious ground, a year ago this question would've been laughed off but now it has to be taken very seriously.

KP's ahead but AB is closing the gap as his maturity is reflected in more responsible innings. He's younger and saves runs in the field. Doesn't drop catches either.

Norwood's on Fire
It didn't carry- it bounced just before his hands. At least, that's how i remember it. I can't find a video of it anyway.

Not that it matters much, he's probably the best fielder in the game at the moment and one dropped catch doesn't change that. Took one of the best you'll ever see off Ian Bell in that very game, in fact.
I thought the reason zaremba posted it was to highlight that AB is a cheating ****

He made a silly claim and then changed what he was saying. I've just replied to the original argument which was just bad wording on his part.
Uhh maybe. I thought it was obvious that i didn't mean, "being not out doesn't make your average larger than it would have been had you been out", but looking back perhaps it was pretty easy to misinterpret.

I really meant, "having a lot of not-outs doesn't make your average an inflated reflection of your ability", for reasons stated previously.

Oh I agree with that then.

That's just because you don't like KP.

Based on their test careers so far - which are of similar length(KP has played 52 tests, AB 50) one would be mad not to pick KP.

14 test centuries to 9 - 8 runs per innings more.

Surprising how easily people around here under-rate a 50+ test average and try and compare it to a measly 43+ average.

Nothing, nothing at all, but i feel you're missing the point.

I'll put it another way- AB De Villiers scores 200 runs before getting out. Kevin Pietersen also scores 200 runs, then gets out. Both have the same average. Sound fair?

Now, AB De Villiers scored the first 100 of his runs seeing South Africa home in Perth, then the next 100 at the start of the next match before getting out. KP simply scores 200 at Leeds before getting out. What exactly is better about KP's contribution? If anything, surely AB's was more difficult because he had to start his innings all over again in a new match against a fresh attack?
100% with Uppercut on this one, its fairly logical really

Yet you are comparing him to someone who, by your own admission, has had a good year. A couple of years ago, people on here were seriously putting Mike Hussey forward as the second-best batsman of all time, because they were suggesting that 20 tests at an average of around 85 was sufficient to draw that conclusion.

Incidentally, de Villiers' batting average in March 2005 was 43. In March 2006 it was, er, 43. A poor 2007 saw him slide down the ranking, but credit to the guy, in 2008 and 2009 he got his batting back on the rails to the extent that, by March 2009, he had got his average up to a staggering........

43.

It's astonishing how underrated Kevin Pietersen is on this forum.

Always makes runs against the best opposition in the world but yet fails to cash-in against the weaker opposition. His the only batsman to have not cashed in on weak opposition and yet be penalised for not doing so on a cricket forum.

The only reason Pietersen hasn't made a standout match-winning hundred is because the English cricket team is full of a bunch of muppets who take unloseable position in the match and turn it into a humiliating defeat.

Pietersen is probably the most phenomially gifted batsman that I've ever seen barring Tendulkar, Lara & Ponting.
