Interesting point again when I realized the makeup of my local side, Stella Londt Park..Goughy said:Cricket was always viewed as a very Anglo sport by Afrikaaners and the schools payed little heed to it compared to Rugby etc. In other words it was the enemies game. And even now with it flourishing it is doing so despite the system. I know many talented Afrikaans guys that are getting screwed by the system. What is happening is that they are just taking over places from the English speakers. There can still only be 6 whites out of a 12 man squad no matter what their 1st language is.
Apart from SA Crickets development figures. talking to Afrikaaner guys that played rep cricket in the 70s and 80s they would say that they were the only non-English speaking player on the team. Now junior cricket is predominently all Afrikaans with the occasional English speaker and the quota players.
Afrikaans cricket is incredible. The drive, dedication and work ethic is unlike anything Ive seen before. Here in lies another problem with quotas in that the Dutchmen have succeeded through toil and effort whereas Black Africans have their places assured. Doesnt take a genius to figure out why they are succeeding and others arent.
We play in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan league, and whilst I speak Afrikaans, I am the only person in the team not of Afrikaans heritage.. We have no coloured or black players either, and often play sides who are only coloured or black.. Not sure what to make of your comments and how they stack up but I assume quotas do not take place out of the age groups.. Any idea what the situation is in local Rugby?
