Think Miandad got some rough calls away, but not enough for a balance. He wasn't given out LBW at home for nine years. Averaged 80-odd at home and 38 away around then.

Quite similar players in terms of conditions preferences and general grittiness. Miandad pre-decline averaged only two runs less than Barrington in a tougher era and longer sample of years played. That in isolation gives him a head-start. But he had a major home/away split (unlike Dravid) and there is the home umpire controversy surrounding his career. He most likely copped some rough calls overseas but probably not enough to balance out his fortune at home.

Javed was also not overly great against pace bowling (except the Hadlee dominance) but Barrington doesn't have a good record against good pace attacks at home.

Think Dravid has a definite edge on Barrington but this is a 50-50 where I take Miandad just.

Barrington had a major home/away discrepancy too.

Yeah partly because conditions were a lot better away.

Runs-per-wicket in Barrington's home and away tests:

Home: 29.91
Away: 37.64

Admittedly the tougher home conditions are an argument in his favour. Unlike Dravid v Barrington, I have no strong opinion here really. Think it's 50/50. I'm just not convinced Miandad couldn't have roughly done what Barrington did overseas considering the conditions, age curve and attacks faced.

Good post.

Close. I've changed my vote. Miandad had a significantly longer career but Barrington was a run machine on Asian surfaces so he'd have thrived in Pakistan and I suspect he was slightly better than JM outside the subcontinent.

It's really close and I'm not sure, so I'll sit this vote out.

Neither elite, not ATG for me personally, but definitely great and credible performers for their country.
