Keith StackPole: AUS need a finger spinner

Keith Stackpole, a member of the last Aussie team to triumph in a test series in India in 1969 reckons Australia need to find a good finger spinner to partner Warne on this year's tours to Sri Lanka and India. He mentioned this on ABC radio today during the IND - ZIM game.

What do people think of this idea ?
I'm not sure if Australia have a finger spinner worth taking to the subcontinent....

I would take Bevan to both India and Sri Lanka as a specialist bowler if it wasn't for his shoulder. He spins it the opposite way to Warne, at least.

Katich may well be bowled a hell of a lot.

Personally I think Lehmann could be useful over there - not a real handful, but he is far better with the ball than most, and himself, give him credit for.
People joke about him not turning it, but he spins it as much as any fingerspinner going around.

I rate Katich as a much better part-timer than Lehmann. Bevan too, but he has a bad shoulder.

From what I have heard Bevan is basically retired from bowling, but he wasn't the worst.
Katich is nowhere near as accurate as Lehmann and while he is a leggie, he still gets most of his wickets with Long-Hops.
I would expect Lehmann to turn it sufficiently to be a threat out there, and Katich to be too wayward as usual.

I feel Austrailia will need to take a specialist finger spinner as I think India will be able to cope with the bowling of Lehmann and Katich without too much trouble.

I am also looking forward to the resumption of the Tendulkar-Warne battle. By Warne's own admission Tendulkar has won the battle so far, interesting to see what happens next ...

Ive seen him bowl quite a bit actually. Ive seen all his Canada games and quite a few South Australia games.

I think he could do allright as a spinner as well.

He is accurate and turn's the ball not much but In sub-contenent condition's he would still turn it enough.

He could be very frustrating for batsman particuarly if they think they should be smashing him.

So do I. From what I've heard he's won plenty of sparkling opinions from those who apparently know what they're talking about.
He took 3\27 in a recent game, career-best figures, but still his First-Class record is very poor indeed.
Until he starts taking wickets cheaper, I will rate him poor as most Australian bowlers.

Surely Warne can't go to pieces 3 series' out of 3?
IMO Australia don't have any specialist fingerspinners whose ability significantly outweighs Lehmann's. There is no point picking a specialist spinner if you have a batsman who can do almost as good a job.

oh,he's a left armer too, which adds, because it's been shown that tendulkar struggles against left arm spinners like vettori and even nicky boje whose bowling i don't rate THAT highly...
