People talk like Ponting and Kallis are Sehwag and Boycott.

Sehwag/Gilly are different from Ponting. Didn't Smith declare with 60 some overs to go for a target of 270 or something against Australia?
That was because they were 0-1 down.

At this point,

For me, Tendulkar>Waugh>Ponting>Kallis>Lara>Dravid>Sanga>Sehwag
Tendulkar>Lara>Waugh>Kallis>Ponting>Dravid>Sehwag>Gilchrist>Sangakkara>Hayden>Inzamam for me atm.

The two comparisons Kallis, Ponting and Dravid, Sehwag are mighty close atm though.

Kallis has overtaken Ponting in the hundreds count.

Other than blatant bias, I don't see how Ponting can be called a better batsman than Kallis. They are of similar age and started their careers at roughly the same time.

Tendulkar>Lara>Ponting>Kallis>Dravid =Waugh >Sehwag => Laxman = Sanga = Inzamam

Last four hard to split and Dravid ,Waugh hard to split.

After these Yousuf = Jayawardene > Hussey = Smith.

Look at Smith not declaring right now. Fear of a quickfire Sehwag innings.

It changes games, within ten overs, the field is pushed back, the bowlers start bowling tripe, fielders are defensive and every other batsman in the lineup benefits. You just have to watch Sehwag's effect on the rest of the lineup again, over the past few years.

A long innings will eventually demoralize bowlers, but it'll be a while and they can attack for a long time. What we see with really dominating innings is that even at the other end, bowlers start bowling tripe as they're off their rhythm, the fields all messed up, and the game seems to be taken away....

As I said, if I had two batsmen of similar averages I would pick the faster S/R 10/10 times. If the difference in S/R is 20+, let alone 30-40+, I'd probably pick the faster S/R even if the averages are 5-7 points lower.
That's because Smith is a *****.

I'd have seriously considered declaring at about 290.

And then if Sehwag hits a quickfire 30(like he did at durban) even today and India get to 50 for 1, then they only have to get 240 the next day and they are on the backfoot and can't keep attacking.

Fine (and I agree FWIW) but I don't know a single current international captain who would - and I was asked why S/R matters - this is why.

You have an outsized effect compared to your stats. Even though everyone logically knows it's unlikely, it looms in your head and makes you do things you wouldn't do if Dravid (an overall better player) was opening. You don't want to have to start to take off your fast bowler after three overs. You don't want to have to start taking slips out when the score is 50 off 5. Many times, even if he gets out, the damage is already done in terms of body language, and it lasts the whole innings.

I see times where Sehwag comes and scores at 6 runs an over and the fielders are pushed back and the bowlers are taken off. A new batsman comes in and is scoring at 2 rpo but the body language is still crap and the field is nowhere near as aggressive it would have been had it been the same score with a different batsman.

Hell, even Boycott's mother knows it's unlikely for Sehwag to score runs but every South African still worry most about Sehwag 'taking the game away', even though there are at least two better batsmen (three in SA conditions) that come after him.

You have Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, with a brand new ball and a wearing pitch. Back them to take early wickets and put India massively on the back foot overnight.

They were there at Durban too in the 2nd innings and it was much more of a seaming/swinging pitch and conditions plus a lower scoring match.

Sehwag still scored a quickfire 32 off 31 in the second innings.

I am not expecting him to score a century here, lets say if he had repeated just that and India would have gone into play at 50 for 1 chasing 290.

Would have been a really better situation ,tbh.

And South African field would have been 2 way tomorrow.

for the same reason Hobbs and Bradman aren't....
Viv played in an era very similar to the one Sachin/Waugh et all played in, its not really the same thing.

I suspect the SA pacers are tired. Particularly Steyn. I could be wrong but he's been bowling an unusually large percentage of overs.

This doubles the Sehwag problem, if he gets on top of them now then they are more likely to flag, ala the Indian pacers in the second innings. And South Africa don't have a Singh.
