Kallis retires from Tests

Yea, don't quite understand that.

But he plays by his own rules.
Most of CW will never understand it because it goes against the test > ODI's motto, but I think these days he's more important for balance reasons in ODI's. In tests they can just go with Duminy and four quicks.

Plus the WC is pretty much the only thing missing from the CV. He's made that the target for a long time but clearly feels he can't get keep playing tests for another year.

I've always had the impression that the SA players are more like the SC teams in that they tend to value WC wins and even ODIs in general a lot more than say, Australia or England. You only had to hear Abd gushing about the "away series win" after winning the ODI series v Pakistan in the UAE, really. I can understand why Kallis would like to play ODIs more than tests now - a WC win will properly çomplete his career from his own POV now that SA have been at the top of the test rankings for quite a while. However, I do think SA can do without Kallis in ODI's more than in tests.

**** there has been some idiotic posting here. Wasn't Kallis first selected as an opening bowler? An average of 32 when your mostly bowling with the old ball is very very good really. I remember watching him in the last SA tour of NZ, and being more scared of him than Steyn or Morkel, because he just would not let the pressure relent, and you just knew that one of our batsmen would die trying to get out of jail as a result.

What a player, test cricket will surely miss him.

Surely it is the opposite? SA have Ryan McLaren for the AR job in ODI's and in the best of times, Kallis has tended to struggle in ODIs with his scoring rate. Think he is far more important and harder for them to replace in tests, personally.

An extraordinary player, and one I've grown to admire hugely. In my opinion he's unquestionably the most valuable cricketer of the past 20 years, and might just be the most valuable of the past 40.

I will miss him. Well played Mr Kallies.

Congrats on a brilliant career Kallis. Best player I've ever seen.

Not to mention, when his workload wasn't reduced later on, in 2003, he made the ICC top 10 for bowlers.

Guess I am guilty of this as Test cricket will always be more important than ODI's.

What a great all-round record...which doesn't even show how good of a slipper he was
What a great cricketer

The best Cricketer of the last 25 years for mine and undoubtedly one of the most underrated cricketers ever.

Imagine what his legacy would be like had he been Indian, English or Australian with the freakish record he's compiled.

Good grief, they're dropping like flies.

I fear for test cricket sometimes.

Well done Kallis - an especially fine batsman, and very decent bowler
Wow, marginally understated IMHO. More like 'master batsman/one of the all time greats' and 'very fine bowler'

I've never been that interested in stats, and in Kallis' case for a while I definitely undervalued him as a bowler. Funnily enough I feel like in the last five years his bowling has actually improved, which is astonishing to me. He's a better bowler now than he was in his early 30s.

That reason alone says a lot about his greatness for me.

Let's not descend into hyperbole though. He may be a statto's wet dream, but a true allrounder he ain't.

Not in the 'Botham in his pomp' sense. But a very, very good batsman.
What a load of rubbish. He's a better bowler than my fellow countryman Hadlee was as a batsman for example, and few question that Hadlee was an true all-rounder. The guy has the same sort of bowling record as the likes of Zaheer Khan, Jimmy Anderson etc.

Had he been English you'd never be saying that.

Incidentally, do you consider Sobers to be a true all-rounder?

To be fair, he's also a better actor than Brando; a better scientist than Einstein; a better polymath than Da Vinci.

This place is the ****ing pits. :)
