I finally agree with Coronis, Sutcliffe is greater than either, and arguably an equal of Hammond himself.

anyway, Root, then Barrington and Compton, then May

Wisden did a list of greatest english batsmen?
not exactly, but as peterhrt once posted, when Hammond died in 1965, he was rated among the 4 greatest batters to ever live, alongside WG Grace, Donald Bradman and Sir John Berry Hobbs "The judgment of cricket history is that the greatest batsmen the game has known are - in order of appearance, only - WG Grace, Jack Hobbs, Walter Hammond and Don Bradman. Others may come close indeed to those four but do not quite take place with them."

when Hutton died in 1990, Wisden came close to giving a proper top 4, where they rated Hutton alongside Sir Hobbs and rated Hammond and Compton behind them "If English cricket alone is taken into consideration he was one of the two most accomplished professional batsmen to have played for his country, the other being Sir Jack Hobbs with Walter Hammond and Denis Compton coming next."

which is stupid asf to me as Sutcliffe isn't necessarily inferior to Hammond.

Sutcliffe is a weird case where everyone knows he was unlucky and underrated and still nobody started rating him. Barrington is ****ed on the other hand.
Barrington making the Cricinfo team over Compton was a decent surprise. But Pietersen wasn't.

David "Bumble" Lloyd rates Pietersen over Compton, Barrington and Root as the greatest English batsman he's ever seen because Pietersen was the most exciting and got him off his seat. A lot of people around the world, who aren't analysts, rate people this way.

Yeah, and find it such a shame. There are people, who still unironically rate Virat of Smith in Tests. I don't mind it in general, but when people who are supposed to be "experts", on whose words many a young mind forms their opinions does something like this...... Yeah, rating batsmen off of excitement isn't sound in the slightest.

Doesn’t even make sense. Smith always has me excited because I’m wondering if his brain is going to melt from replaying every shot 3 times.
