Jeff Wilson (Goldie) back in Black Caps

Jeff Wilson, a genuine All Black great, has been named in the Black caps squad for the series against the World 11.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3154377a10,00.html

This guy is a genuine sporting superstar. 44 tries in 60 tests for the AB's. He quit rugby to give cricket another shot a year or so back.

if anyone will succeed it will be him.

FYI....in his last game he hit 44 off 28 balls to beat Aussie in 1993. He hit the winning runs.

Just one of those sportsman!

No he didn't - that was his second-to-last game. He played the series decidder in Auckland as well.

Nitpicking aside, it's great to see him back, and I hope he steps up to the mark - if only so Otago can have a representative in the Black Caps again. :D

Wilson's inclusion a publicity stunt; nothing more!!!

I think that Wilson's inclusion is a bloody outrage! His form does not justify his selection and is therefore a slap in the face to the likes of Fulton, Canning, Franklin, Gaffney, and Cumming.

These games are ideal for bringing in young talent before the Australian series, especially since the results do not affect the ODI team ranking.

And it's not as though NZ needs another so-called allrounder in the team! We need specialist batsmen and bowlers that have the ability to compete consistently against international opposition.

And lets not forget that Wilson is in his at the end of his career. I guess Wilson may draw a slightly larger crowd, but that isn't going to count for jack a year from now.

John Bracewell you're a bloody idiot! Way to blow another opportunity to bring through young talent!! Much in the same way you did with the selection of the team for the BAN series before the recent AUS series. And let's remember what a success that was!

He's taken his wickets at an average of about 17 in the domestic one-dayers this year - so your claim his form does not justify his selection is quite frankly rubbish.

Yeah, because our current set-up of a plethora of all-rounders really hasn't worked has it? Remind me the last time we lost a home ODI series?

Why is it a slap in the face to Fulton, Cumming, Gaffaney & co? they were picking a bowler!

I guess Tama Canning could feel a little disappointed..but then again, he's been involved with a hopeless Auckland OD side this season.

Jeff was just brought in to draw some big crowds. I don't think we will see him VS Aussie or anything.

Wilson has good form over three matches! On that basis Fulton and co would have been selected over a year ago. NZ needs to build for the future and should threfore bring through players under the age of 30.

Butler's replacement doesn't necessarily need to be a bowler with all the all-rounders in the side. If you need a bowler then Aldridge, Schwass, and Hamilton have been the form bowlers. But then they haven't played for the All Blacks, and a few games for the BCs 12 years ago.

And it's not as though he is helping Otago win games! Nothing against Otago.

Im in agreance. Jeff is there for the dollars being brought in...what about new players coming through!! Ok so its great to see an Otago boy in the Black Caps but what about asserting some fear by bringing in someone that ACTUALLY bowls fast...Bond is the only one in years to do that we should be looking at doing so again!!! Call up James McMillan I say! hes not even at peak and is bowling near 140k/hr. Wazza McSkimming couldve been an option too

But have you guys seen Aldridge, Hamilton etc bowl? they're just medium pacers at best...and quite frankly they'd be destroyed overseas.

So you guys name me the other genuine quicks around at the moment that are worthy of a call-up.
And why on earth are we continuing to talk about batsmen like Fulton when it wasn't a batting spot that was open in the first place?

I doubt Jeff is bowling that quick these days. How fast is Schwass? I only saw him play once and can't remember. He has an excellent record for wicket-taking, in potentially helpful conditions though.

Schwass is just the same..medium pace.

It's all very well calling these guys up to play in NZ, but think about how they would go overseas especially on sub-continent tracks.

Alot of NZ Domestic bowlers get plenty of wickets because the conditions help them big-time, rather than the bowlers actually learning to bowl a good line & length on even tracks.

As much as I like Warren, he's not that quick and not in the best of form either - does an over against Northern District 3 days ago ring any bells?

I totally agree. There are a number of players at domestic level who have been playing consistantly well over several seasons and havn't been given a look into the NZ side. IMO Wilson has not been playing long enough and consistantly enough to justify his place in the squad.

yeah that wasnt ideal but to be fair field placement by Cummings didnt help proceedings. partiularly in the last four overs as well. Other than that Wazza and Scott, although slower manage to slow the run rate down.

Since when can mcglashon hit...he never did for Otago!!!

That player just smacked me for six, I know i will bowl another half volly, oh crap he did it again, i know another half volly will do the trick, im sure he will hit it down long offs throat this time. No that didn't work either. Wazza Mc is a good club and domestic bowler but he would get hammered in international cricket.

Pretty hard for a captain to set a field for sixes...

If you look at the explanation they gave for selecting Jeff you'll see why he was selected:

- He's been bowling good lines & getting bounce with a bit of pace.

Thats the type of bowler you want to take overseas also. Not just any bowler who relies heavily on swing, so when it doesn't swing he just gets carted.
