James Anderson GOAT

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
Kinda flips the received wisdom about him on its head. "Sure he was a gun bowler in Asia, but did he have the skills to capitalise in swing-friendly South African conditions?"
Not so much swing friendly, but definitely seam and pitch friendly.

He was turd everywhere in 04/05 though, and not much better than decent in 09/10.

There might be something to it. He's definitely not as good in SA as he is in England, but I don't think we have enough to say he's worse there than he is away from home in general.

In all seriousness though, is Anderson amongst the top seven fast bowlers in the world.

Definitely Better:

Cummins
Bumrah
Rabada
Jamieson

Probably Better:

Hazlewood
Wagner
Nortje
Sharma
Siraj

Could even argue for Southee and Boult here

Has he ever been a top three bowler for any sustained period?
Please refer to the thread title.

you didn't need to be so scared gimh, i went and checked and he was actually really good everywhere.

far, far more destructive at home than away but he did his job away from home. fair credit to him, i expected more duke ball spam and i was wrong.
Stuff like this is because Anderson was generally rubbish away from home until around 2009 and they've just stuck with the pre-conceived notion that Anderson sucks away from home despite a massive body of evidence against that.

Whatever it takes!!!
The bloke just gets better and better.
The fitness and the drive are the amazing qualities IMO. Bowlers get to know more and more about their own body, bowling and situations as they play more but usually they are done or their body/gifts are deserting them around the same time. McGrath seemed an exception along with guys like Walsh but now Anderson is making them look actually young. lol.

Pretty sure that average in South Africa also includes the series in 2015 or 16 where he was injured and only played 1 test.

04/05 was only 1 test as well, and early career Anderson has a few examples where he's brought in (particularly away from home) for 1 test and takes 1/150.

He’s still very close to his peak level right? Not seeing any signs of decline at all this summer.

That is true. But when he does play his bowling looks as good as ever to me. Maybe doesn’t have as good a bouncer as he once did, but that’s never been what he’s about.
