I normally say if it's close not even, use the secondary skill as a tie breaker, and...

Lara is comfortably ahead as a batsman

But

Kallis has two equally great secondary skills where he's far ahead of Lara.

Have to think about this one.

Lara. A level ahead of Kallis as a bat and Kallis' bowling can't make the gap. It's close tho.

Thought this would be closer since Viv almost beat Kallis

Makes sense that one is closer. People are voting for Kallis here on fielding and bowling. Viv was a top fielder and did a bit of holding up an end with the ball.

The tougher era of batting argument is also easier to make with Viv- Lara had only played about 1/4 of his tests before Kallis debuted. Which is not to say that Lara played in an easier era than Viv (no idea tbh), but it does feel intuitively easier to say that Viv's era was tougher in relation to Kallis.

Kallis at no point in his career approached Lara level as a bat. The only way a captain is picking him over Lara is if his attack is just four spinners.
