Jack Leach out of the Ashes

Stokes is 100% the key.

If he can't bowl, or can't bowl much, we have to play 4 seamers and use Root.

If he can bowl 10 to 15 overs a day, we can play a spinner - personally I'd go for Dawson, as much for his batting as bowling.

I imagine they’d have had an idea of which three seamers were going to play which Tests in advance.
With Leach out it’s not as simple as just pick all the seamers in all the Tests.
Wood himself has said he’s only expecting to play three at most - it’s unlikely that any of those would have been in place of Leach, so you’d expect that Broad and Anderson would have missed at least one each.
So if we are forgoing a spinner entirely, there’s now 20 Tests we need to get out of the seam bowling unit rather than 15 and I think it’d be wise to pick Woakes at a ground where he’s got an unbelievable record than potentially elsewhere where Wood might have a bigger impact…

I think if Stokes is bowling they'd definitely play a spinner. 5 seamers seems a massive overkill.
If Stokes was bowling I reckon they'd go with Rehan. You can afford a bit of a punt if you have five bowlers, and he'd have nuisance factor with the bat as well.

It's probably too risky to do that as one of four bowlers though. I'd do something funky like drop Crawley and open with Dawson or Jacks but they won't do that so it's probably pointless discussing it. 'Pick the best four quicks and use Root as the spinner until Stokes is right to bowl later in the series' seems like the best realistic option.

Yeah, makes sense. At the end of the day it's not going to make a difference so you may as well keep the margins respectable

In all seriousness though, it's ****ing woeful to lose your first choice spinner in a series like this. i know we have Murphy as a back up but he's played all of one series in spin friendly conditions himself.

Yeah this.

Rehan is the option with the biggest upside as a bowler imo, but playing him as part of a 4 man attack would be a poor idea tstl.

The rest of the possible candidates are either all rounders or just not especially good, in which case you may as well just go with another actual seam bowler + Root.

Picking an all rounder simply because "they can bowl spin" (level of ability notwithstanding) in English conditions is a horrible strategy.

I think its prettty straight forward.

If Stokes cant bowl much, pick Woakes and use Root as the spinner.

If Stokes can bowl a decent amount, pick Rehan.
Rehan has been taken to the cleaners in the 2nd Div, he'd be a long way down my list at the mo. If they do go with a spinner, I'd have Dawson. Took a 6-61 to win Hants a Championship game, can also bat as well and would fit in at number 8. Has been also bowling well and taking wickets in the Blast, so if the Aussies did target him he'd have more than an inkling about what to do.

But maybe we should ask, what would the Aussies least like to see? I suspect it's Anderson, Robinson, Broad and Wood with Root and hopefuly Stokes as back up.

It will be interesting to see who we pick.

McCullum and Stokes always go for the positive option - that's the essence of Bazball.

I'd go for Liam Dawson, but he is probably a more conservative choice - a seasoned pro who can bat well. But in truth he's not particularly likely to cause the Aussies too much trouble- he's not going to bowl us to the Ashes.

Will we go safe or will we go for an attacking spinner like Ahmed or even Jack Carson. Much more risky and less certain of what you'll get but could potentially, particularly Ahmed, cause more problems.

I think the point is that Leach was never going to bowl us to an Ashes either, but he would hold up an end and allow the seamers to rotate. The most like for like replacement there would seem to be Dawson (unless we convince Moeen out of retirement - and it's something I think Stokes could do, I dare say they spent a fair bit of time together in Chennai).

Surprised that Woakes wasn't more in the picture before Leach's injury given his outstanding home record. Horses for courses.

I know it's not going to happen, but the answer to me seems to be that Stokes shouldn't play unless he's fit to bowl; bring in both Woakes and Dawson or whoever gets the nod as the spin option, and tell the top-6 to do their job, Bazball style.

I think Stokes has to play even if he can't bowl.

He's our 2nd best batter after Root. He's been there, bought the t shirt and done it.
