Compared to Sachin, Viv and Gavaskar; Hutton did not face the same calibre of bowlers and I am not even sure how many greats(if any) Hobbs faced
TBH does it really matter who they faced when Sachin and Lara never performed against any great pacer well except one, Steyn for Sachin and McGrath for Lara.

Lol Tendulkar had two very good back to back series against McGrath. On top of doing well against Warne.

We're discussing pacers, Sachin averages 36 in games with McGrath
Actually the post you replied was discussing bowlers generally. And Tendulkar actually performed well against McGrath in the two full series he played, he only goes lower in a one off test and a half 2004/5 series where he may have been playing injured. Certainly to me I consider him to have held his own against McGrath.

Nor do I consider Tendulkar to have failed or performed particularly poorly against Donald or 2Ws frankly.

held his own isn't the same as success which was my original point.

32 against Donald (34 when you take out his teenage years) and nothing against the two Ws, I'm not moved.

Is that against the bowlers or the teams?

And holding your own against a top bowler is success. Or it certainly beats the complete absence of facing such bowlers in the first place. You are acting like Tendulkar flopped against the quality bowling he faced.

20 innings against Donald, 658 runs @ 32, 5 dismissals to Cronje and 5 to Donald.

against Pakistan, he got dismissed constantly by Saqlain.

Neither Sachin nor Lara dismantled great attacks, simply put, just coexisting with great pacers isn't something to be creditted for.

sure, but Hobbs could dominate, was just as much of a monster on tough wickets and was destroying pacers near 50 when Hutton was finished at 40.
Ngl, feel like Hutton and Hobbs are probably the two GOAT bad wicket bats.

Why bring Cronje and Saqlain if you are talking top pacers?

Moderate success against top pacers is better than no record to begin with.
