These are Yuvraj's ODI scores in the 20 innings prior to todays .... a habit of swashbuckling batting indeed.

As far as massacring the mightiest of bowlings, its easy to choose the innings against australia and the new sri lankan attack and see how he performed.

Some massacre indeed.
I would have loved to see A list of innings from T20 matches as well..(wont mind IPL included)....Now that you have done so much

That does not make him a gentle plunderer
The whole point is not how many runs he makes in each of the innings he plays.....no one comes closer to sachin. But Sachin no matter how feared he was in his haydays.....can not be termed as a merciless plunderer..(Call him run machine/master blaster/maestro whatever)..Hope you all get this point

He might be the plunderer in the Indian team. But not in the world. Even today, Lee would have butterflies in his stomach before he starts a spell against Tendulkar, rather than against Yuvraj.

Okay ...I take it as ....for you ...Sachin is a more merciless plunderer than Yuvraj is.......That is acceptable (even if debatable) point of view.

and jsut to mention
I just completed my century of posts on this forum.......after 2 and a half years .or perhaps even more.....How many posts it takes to become International player BTW?

I wish I knew. I would sit 20-hrs a day typing if I had a chance to become one just via CW.

So your definition of merciless plunderer = Yuvraj, and your argument is that Yuvraj is the most Yuvraj-like Yuvraj currently Yuvrajing it up.

Dighton is better tbh...

To make my point more clear.....A plunderer is who

1. Can hit the ball harder.....( You know you can hit it slow in gaps an still get a 4....but the element of mercilessness is missing)
2. Can hit many of such 4s
3. Can hit the ball for sixes all over the park against all kind of bowling.(Fast/Slow)..Hits lots of them
4. The sixes make look all stadia smaller
5. Has been doing so (or has done so) for sufficiently long time (Richards, Chris Cairns, Mccullum are the ones who are among contenders in my view etc etc)
6. Makes enough runs and in a way to be called a proper batsman (Just to avoid sloggers from the list)

I suppose this gives a good measure.....add to this if you wish so.....if justifiable

Surprised there is little/no mention of Sanath Jayasuriya. He is probably the most lethal ODI batsman of the modern era, IMO. One of those people where the game just wasn't over until he was out. Guys like Yuvraj, Afridi and Klusener had their moments, but if I had to label one batsman as an all-time plunderer, it'd be Jayasuriya.

Usually I am quite good at avoiding all sorts of debates, especially with having to sit for 2nd MBBS in three weeks time without having gone through half of cunningham's yet. But this... errr... let's just say was quite irresistable.

Yuvi's reord in the last two years.
Mat Dis bwd Mat/Dis Ave
BAW Mendis (SL) 6 4 3 1.50 15.00
M Muralitharan (SL) 31 3 1 10.33 5.33
DL Vettori (NZ) 15 3 0 5.00 18.00
OK, Let's forget about spinners of this callibre lets see how he has done against a really mediocre spinner

TM Dilshan (SL) 28 2 1 14.00 16.00
Hmmm... In short the way yuvi plays against quality spinners makes even Laxman look like a clumsy teenager.
Yuvi really is a ruthless plunderer. He gives spinners all around the world goosebumps.

I saw his swashbuckling thrashing of the English bowlers today. He seems to have made it like a habit....to just come and massacre the mightiest of bowlings (ODIs and T20)
He is still not a test match material and perhaps would never be one.....but in my recent memory i dont remember any other batsman who plunders bowling attacks with such disdain. Add to that he never looks like slogging....he hits clean and he has elegance in his shotmaking. More so he does this to all oppositions and on a regular basis.
Not long ago he was groping against a spinner who only played half a dozen of ODI matches

Never gets mentioned as a great. Very odd. People keep bragging about Inzamam's, Gilchrists, Pontings, Steve Waughs, but fails to appriciate that as a player Jayasuriya tops them all.Becuase Jaya was a multi-discipline cricketer. Punishing batsman, very good death bowler, brillinat fieldsman, successful captain, great ambassador and a crystal clear record on the field. I would think not many can match that.

Yeah, I think the thing working against Jayasuriya is probably his average. In a sense, he has been a bit of let-down in that he doesn't rank up there with the other great ODI batsmen in terms of average - Compared to Tendulkar at 44, Viv Richards at 47, and Bevan at 50+, Jayasuriya averages a meager 32 which is even lower than some of the more middle-of-the-line ODI batsmen like Jadeja, Yuvraj Singh, Kaif, etc.

But if there is any player with whom numbers don't tell the full story, that player is Jayasuriya, IMO. I once saw a little segment that called Jayasuriya one of the true pioneers of ODI cricket, and I think if I had to choose one player who truly put SL on the world cricket map, I would pick Jaya over DeSilva, Ranatunga or even Muralitharan.

As you can see, I am a Jayasuriya fanboy!
8-)

Jayasuriya averages 35.0 when he's opening the innings, which co incides with the time where SLC realized his potential. He has a SR of 90.7 opening the innigs. That will put up him with the best.

Lets put this in context.

Yuvraj is a fabulous striker of the cricket ball. His timing is immaculate. The swing of his bat is clean and beautiful. He is very powerful. All this makes for scintillating power play when he gets it right. So what do I disagree with here?

The way we go over bard in the choice of words ..... as usual.

The most merciless plunderer of all time ?

Really?

Who are the others in contention please? Care to name them and also compare them with Yuvraj while you are at it.

It was a fabulous innings yesterday. Absolute mayhem after he had got the runner. I loved it just as I have loved the other superb innings Yuvraj has played. Bu the most merciless murderer? and of all times ? Sorry boss. Thats a bit too much.
