Is this the most impressive test victory ever?

Going into the series that was definitely the case. But the levels of performance were vastly different. I also wouldn't agree at all that Australia's attack was decent. On paper it was ok at best, in execution they were poor. Siddle was the only guy that bowled to his potential. Harris could only play a few games, Johnson was his bad version except the one innings at Perth and Hilfenhaus and Bollinger weren't performing at a Test standard.

Compare that to the series 3 years later it's not even a comparison
You could analyse every victory to death and end up asterisking them in one way or another. Then there would never be an impressive victory because there would always be some factor that would discount it.

Although it was a relatively weak Aussie side and we all knew in England it was our best chance to win there for a generation, the three test wins in that series remain among our most dominant. We'd have taken scraping home 2-1 like India in 2018 and 2020, but instead won three times by an innings and scored 517/1 in the draw. It was a crushing Australia have never received at home - even the West Indies sides of the 80s didn't go to Australia and win 3 matches all by an innings.

Shame we've never been able to follow it up since!

Sure, it was dominant but when you consider the factors it wasn't exactly an impressive victory (Hayden's hundred is an impressive feat), if it went much longer it probably would've been called off. 51c, drinks breaks every 20 minutes, bowlers doing 2 over spells. Hayden took months to recover from that innings. Shoaib blacked out and went home.
How does the heat affect it being an impress victory? It was the same for both sides
Agreed, surely the insane temps makes it more impressive??

I think it shows the vast difference in dedication and discipline. And how much each side really wanted to win. Maybe the Pakistan players' hearts just weren't in it so they folded in each innings
