Is Rashid Latif completely nuts... or is he an innocent victim of unfair persecution?

It seems a reasonable question to ask. 'cause given the man's history, I would think that one of these possibilities MUST be true.

The latest chapter in the Latif saga:

Rashid Latif banned for six months by PCB

I don't have much of an idea about whether his claims about the pitch have any legitimacy - clearly the PCB doesn't think so.

Depends who you believe really. If the pitch was really that bad then perhaps they shouldnt have been playing on it. Probably not the way to go about it though, conceeding the match. I remember about 10 years ago when and England V West Indiest test was abandoned due to the state of the pitch.

But that was with agreement of all parties.

It does appear to me that he's getting the rough end of the stick.

I reckon he has a penchant for ruining his career.

I reckon in that case you should just play on. Be strong, play through the pain, be tough, take it on the chin, dont cry. Or if it really is a problem, go through the proper ways to get the match abandoned.

No need to know you're an Aussie beforehand.

It's 30-4 and your batsmen's careers are in jeopardy. It's a much bigger burden to Latif should someone's career get ended on that track than a six-month ban.

True, but (without knowing all the facts) the report reads as more of a "toys out of pram" incident.

I wonder what the oppo's skipper had to say on state of pitch? Or the rest of Karachi, for that matter. I guess the fact that they walked off implies some kinda tacit agreement with Latif.

Latif has never struck me as a toys-outta-pram sort of fellow.
If he's going to make trouble, he usually makes it a considered thing (a la his match-fixing letter).

I dunno; grassing up your teammates strikes me as pretty rash, however laudable his intentions.

There were plenty of other ways he could have done that with much, much more fallout.

I forgot a third possibility - which would be that Rashid's completely nuts AND a victim of unfair persecution. This could also be true.

Anyway, upon researching this news a little further, it looks like only one player was injured, and he was hit on the finger. When this happened, Rashid rushed out and pleaded with the umpires to halt the match. When the umpires refused, he conceded the result. I can't find any commentary that agrees that the pitch was as dangerous as Rashid claims, although the fact that all 4 wickets fell to LBW decisions may suggest that there was variable bounce.

In case anybody's unaware of Rashid Latif's history, he was lauded as having "lifted the lid off match-fixing" when he played an active part in the exposing of some unsavory activities by Salim Malik and others. Since then, though, he's been a little patchy, with allegations of selection bias (could be true - but the evidence he said he'd collect and present never eventuated), being banned for 5 matches for wrongly claiming a catch in a game against Bangladesh, and accusations by Adam Gilchrist of having made a racial slur. More recently, he alleged that the fourth ODI vs India in Pakistan this year was fixed.

But even if Rashid's fears about the pitch were unjustified, it seems like there's no precedent whatsoever for such a penalty - in fact, everything in place for such an event (conceding a match) seems to be directed towards a team rather than a captain, and competition penalties rather than personal bans. Obviously the PCB has an axe to grind over some of his past behaviour.

To me, he does come off like he has a screw loose, to be honest. But the way the PCB has treated him seems manifestly unfair.

If he'd just phoned them up, maybe, but in a letter you are considering what you're writing (and whether you're writing) over a little while.

I do take your point, but I meant I don't think he'd properly thought the consequences thru. Of course he's to be commended for being the whistle blower, but I don't think it's had a positive effect on his career as a cricketer.

Cricket is (obviously) a team sport & a pretty tribal one at that. Rightly or wrongly being your own man & rocking the boat isn't usually the best way to further your career, whether you're reporting match fixers or declaring on 33-4!
