Is Moeen Ali the best ever test no-rounder?

Also, particularly when it comes to internationals which are 11 vs 11 irrespective of the countries' populations, a larger talent pool will have less and less of an effect, because one can only get so much better than everyone else at elite level. At a certain point, the improvement will tail off or 'saturate'.

Yea the very top players only have so much improvement possible - unless you take the next leap to a Bradman.

That’s where the depth matters - and where bigger squads can come in

Does Sam Curran count as a no rounder? 24 matches with a batting average of 24 and a bowling average of 35 with 3 50's and no 5 wicket hauls.

His best bowler ranking is perhaps a little artificial. He was ranked 4 at the outbreak of World War 1 and the guys ahead of him didn't play any matches after the war while he played one more in 1924. So they dropped off the rankings, making him the top bowler by default.
Just revisiting this thread because I'm bored. His one test appearance in 1924 was pretty crap and he went wicketless. How did he jump from 4 to 1 from it?

It wasn't that test which got him to number 1. Everyone ranked above him in 1914 never played again, so were removed from the rankings, but having played a test in 1924 meant that he was eligible for inclusion when cricket resumed again and he become number 1 by default.

International Coach
Ravi Ratnayeke - Ws pretty skillful, but never coverted the talent to performance. And despite being supremely fit, retired at the age of 32, because he wanted to look afte his afmily. His batting was getting on by that time.

England could name an entire team of no rounders - Pringle, Geoff Miller, Ian Grieg, David Capel, Ronnie Irani, Adam Hollioke, Chris Lewis - that's just off the top of my head

I thought the no-rounder was someone who contributes to the team a fair bit despite being inadequate in both disciplines. Ali fits, but most of those names are utter pants who contributed squat.

Pup Clarke

Cricketer Of The Year
Jos Buttler in tests. Adequate keeper and a useful, occasionally destructive batsman. Could play great reguard knocks but very rarely was consistent

When I made the thread I was going by his career averages which are in the "terrible" category for both a top 6 bat and frontline bowler. If at least one of his averages was a bit better I wouldn't have been so harsh, I know he did have the odd special performance in him but they were really, really rare

Someone compared his aggregate of tons, runs and wickets to Flintoff but Freddie at least had a way more respectable bowling average

Scary thing is Chris Lewis had as much natural talent of any player to play for England in the last 35 years. Sadly he had less heart than the Lion from the Wizard of Oz and is now remembered for being a jailbird. He had it all, could bowl quickly, could bat when he put his mind to it and was one of the best fielders we have ever had. Such a shame he was a lazy waster.

He was very talented but never fulfilled his potential.

He might not have been the sharpest tool in the box.

On tour to the W Indies He shaved his head, didn't wear a hat and got sunstroke. He ended missing a warm up game if my memory serves.
