There are batting all rounders, bowling all rounder's and the jack of all trades / "genuine" all rounders.

So don't think they are better all-rounders than Kallis, they just have different roles.

And as overall cricketers, no contest.

And why isn't Gilchrist seen as an all rounder?

Cos keepers are built different. And then almost all post-Gilchrist keepers would start to be considered all rounders, and a fair few before him. All rounder is hard enough to define as is.

Trevor Goddard was a famously defensive cricketer. Stonewalling opening batsman and spoiling left arm seamer who averaged 26 with the ball through an economy rate of 1.6 and a strike rate of 95.
Late in his career, during the 1966-67 series against Australia, Goddard was bullied by Eddie Barlow into adopting a more attacking off-stump line. The results were dramatic. Economy was as efficient as ever while SR dropped to 58 with Goddard taking 26 wickets in the series.

Barlow was a rare antidote to the negative thinking of the 1960s. Later worked miracles at Derbyshire. The best captain South Africa never had.

Probably didn't help himself by batting the wrong way in certain situations. But no team of any era would turn him down for their XI
People forget that he cost South Africa wins from overly defensive batting where if he was Ponting, Lara or Sachin they probably would have won. Sydney Test 2006 perfect example. Ended up losing the game because they declared twice despite being ahead the whole game until the last innings. There's a reason he was rated just under the top tier as a batsman during his career.

Edit: To be clear not saying he wasn't an ATG and South Africa were obviously better off with him than without him, as would probbaly every team ever

Not even close. There are so many turgid English batsman that don't even have a particularly high level of competence. Like sure, you may snooze your way through a Kallis century, but that century will probably make the game more interesting.

Atherton? Gooch? Strauss? Hussain? Vaughan? Lamb? Gatting? Collingwood?

You'd get more pleasure from reading the phone book.

And I don't want to hear any of this "but Vaughan was an attractive stroke maker". He only averaged about 5 per innings. Which if we're kind and give him the replays too, is probably about a minute worth of satisfaction per innings.
You can add Boycott, Root and Tavare to that list

People state he's the greatest all rounder of all time?
Yea there is a lot of "Cricket Scholars" and "Experts" comparing between him and Sobers for the greatest of all time. There is some merit to it however my opinion is he was an exceptional batsman who could Bowl and field well.

The problem with promoting the case for Shakib in the allrounder rankings is despite him clearly being an ATG allrounder who is overlooked because of who he plays for (this is a balanced allrounder so good he batted #3 in the 2019 WC and scored big runs), he is also a gigantic prick who is selfish enough to prioritize himself above the team.

Kallis and Chanderpaul cop a lot of unfair accusations of being selfish because they don't bosh it every other ball while the free scoring Shakib is clearly all about himself. That entire team has a bit of that running through it tbh, and it is directly costing them a run at a semi. Mahmudullah piped up a few years ago refusing to play tests unless he batted #8 and didn't bowl much. Clearly protecting his job since he is talented enough to be considered for the bigger jobs.

Chander's accusations and criticism were fair and quite earned. He's among the most selfish cricketers I've ever watched, if not the absolute worst.

And he was rewarded mightily for this…when he was about to eclipse Lara’s aggregate in Test cricket…the cricket board gave him the drop.

so it cancels out.

Still he is the second greatest batsman from my country.

You could say the same about Sobers
Both were exceptional batsman, but while Kallis batted within himself and arguably selfishly, Sobers was a top five, top tier ATG batsman and a match winner.

Sobers was arguably the greatest change bowler ever and bore a heavy stock bowler role as well. Kallis gave short bursts and it seemed he did that begrudgingly as well.

Both are included in the ultimate top ATG tier for slip fielders, they caught everything. But Sobers was also superb everywhere, short leg, leg slip, out field, and has a strong claim as the greatest fielder ever.

Yes they are both amazing, but they aren't the same.
