He probably does, just get de Villiers to keep wicketWouldn't even make the all-time SA XI
Dudley Nourse. You're leaving out SA's second best batsman IMO.He probably does, just get de Villiers to keep wicket
1. Smith/Mitchell
2. Taylor
3. Amla
4. Kallis
5. Pollock, G
6. De Villiers+
7. Procter
8. Pollock, S
9. Tayfield
10. Steyn
11. Donald
You could easily come up with a side to leave him out I suppose, with Taylor at 3 and either both other openers or maybe Goddard opening in place of one of the all-rounders. I think I would pick him ahead of Pollock or AB as a specialist bat though.
Nah played in the black and white eraDudley Nourse. You're leaving out SA's second best batsman IMO.
Amla's average was pretty much the same as AB after 110 tests or so. It plummeted well below after that.No Nourse, Richards or Faulkner?
Amla is still my favourite player ever. I would have happily had him in the SA all time XI up until the last 4 years of his career. But he just dropped of the cliff way to much.
I think Amla was more of reason for SA success at the top than ABdVs batting contributions.Amla's average was pretty much the same as AB after 110 tests or so. It plummeted well below after that.
Feel like Nourse more than pretty much anyone else just lives in drafts. Was obviously very good but just don't know much about him. Think the only time he has even cropped up for me is reading about the timeless test. Played in a great era for batting as well.Dudley Nourse. You're leaving out SA's second best batsman IMO.
They still had matting wickets in South Africa so his home conditions were tougher than the rest of the world for batting. Spinners especially could wreak havoc on those decks which Grimmett and O'Reilly did by taking 71 wickets between them in 1935-36. Nourse averaged 57 including a double century in that series. Scored a double century in England too after the War. Never toured Australia sadly but that was the roadiest country at the time so he missed out if anything.Feel like Nourse more than pretty much anyone else just lives in drafts. Quite a few batsman averaged more than Nourse during his career, Bradman, Worrell, Weekes, Harvey, Paynter, Barnes, Hammond, Leyland, Morris, Hutton, McCabe and MitchellFeel like Nourse more than pretty much anyone else just lives in drafts. Which includes undisputed ATG’s (Bradman, Hammond, Hutton), great players in their peaks (Mitchell, Morris), and players who were also peaking/lolsamplesize (Weekes, Worrell, Harvey, Paynter, Leyland). Barnes did play his whole career in that timeframe tbf but yeah, we all know his story.Quite a few batsman averaged more than Nourse during his career, Bradman, Worrell, Weekes, Harvey, Paynter, Barnes, Hammond, Leyland, Morris, Hutton, McCabe and Mitchell
I'm not suggesting that they're all better than him but that's quite a lot of batsman
Fair enough, how many of those batsman would you say are better than Nourse?Which includes undisputed ATG’s (Bradman, Hammond, Hutton), great players in their peaks (Mitchell, Morris), and players who were also peaking/lolsamplesize (Weekes, Worrell, Harvey, Paynter, Leyland). Not a good way to analyse a player without context.
Probably only Bradman, Hammond and Hutton. He's on par with Weekes and better than the rest.Fair enough, how many of those batsman would you say are better than Nourse?
4 of them off the top of my head, others would require me to analyse a bit more. Maybe 1-2 others he could be compared to, though would likely come out on top.Fair enough, how many of those batsman would you say are better than Nourse?
Yeah Amla had an amazing run for a few years where he was churning out hundred after hundred no matter where the game was being played, regardless of who was bowling to him. Felt like so many of SA's successful tours from 2008-2014 or so were built on Amla scoring a mountain of runs at the top of the order and Steyn producing a demon spell out of nowhere to blow the opposition away.I think Amla was more of reason for SA success at the top than ABdVs batting contributions.
Bruce Mitchell has a case.Actually upon a quick reconsideration, he has a case to fight with Weekes (minnow basher + HTB), so definitely just the three.
