IPL4 Auction

I couldn't disagree more with Ugra's article. I think the auction is a brilliant marketing event and a fascinating process. I bet most of the teams put a lot of thought into their strategies and knew exactly what they were doing: how the different players fit together, the various constraints like availability, catchment and the foreign player limit and the IPL track record including how well different players work inside the team. There is so much information that we don't really know about when we make idle criticisms about this or that pick.

And while I definitely want test cricket to thrive, it will have to do so on its own merits and not by trashing the IPL. If ,say,Rohit Sharma wants to make his fortune playing IPL that's his choice and his career. I wouldn't criticize him any more than I would criticize Ugra for using her writing talents on something as frivolous as cricket instead of ,say, investigative journalism.

Agree with this.

So when Real Madrid pay 80 million for Ronaldo ,it is not "slave trade" as sharda ugra put it?

The way it is done, with the player in the public eye, is pretty distasteful, though.

It's the player's choice to put his name in the auction much like a gameshow contestant who goes on TV. And it makes for dramatic television and draws media attention which in turn adds to the IPL's commercial value. The IPL has been an example of brilliant marketing right from the begining and I bet it will be studied in business schools for decades.

The chance of earning 2m>Any psychological discomfort the player may feel when teams are bidding on him tbh.

If the player himself agrees, I don't see what the jazz is all about. Vijay Mallya is a billionaire who is paying the player, he will laugh while buying him if he wishes too. If the player disagrees, He can stop dreaming about the 2m and GAGF.

If Mohammad Kaif wants to earn more and not take 3 auctions to get bought, He should stop being a wholly dire IPL player. That or he can complain to Amnesty Int. which won't pay him btw.

Nah, Best event ever tbh. The Lara and Ganguly thing was the highlight too. The 30 test centuries can go and get ****ed in a T20 auction. If every country concentrated only on T20 achievements for T2o places, the world would be a better place.

IPL auction is definitely the pinnacle, in what I generally find to be a boring form of cricket.

Saurabh Tiwary is overvalued at that price.

And consider this Ambati Rayyudu who had equally a good IPL last time ,will still be getting around the 40 to 60k mark officialy and so will Manish Pandey and Siddarth Trivedi while the likes of Tiwary, Gony,Unadkat are paid a fortune for just playing one or two games or even being in the squad at some point.
Particularly that Tour to Zimbabwe where India lost a couple of matches under Raina and quite a few made a Debut has made many young players here millionaires.

Though it is good to see the likes of Badrinath,Mithun,Umesh yadav etc.. get a good payday i think some of the better uncapped performers in the previous IPL should have also been put up for auction.

Sharda Ugra should be writing articles about this comparison/difference in money earned ,if she wants to criticise the format than someong having a laugh to be honest.

And if she wants to be more positive she can write articles about the good old fringe India players who have been on the verge for so long and playing in the grind of domestic cricket making it big this time rather than previously where only the existing big players did.

I can't vouch for the reliability of my sources, but apparently the team with the greatest financial returns last year was KKR

SRK might not be a cricket snob, but he certainly knows how to make money.

And what was even more funny than the Mohammad Kaif situation was Chris Lynn where when his name came up the Girl from the Deccan chargers put up her paddle and the bid was made.

Then they realised on the table that she had raised it by mistake and started to look around, but nobody else bid and they got him for 20k.

They were wondering almost like everyone who he is and smiling ,though i am sure Mr.Lynn (whoever he is) won't be complaining

Speaking of the positves of the IPl,here is another one -

Franchises turn to uncapped players, Rayudu in demand

It has made the Ranji trophy final a even bigger showcase for the players involved. And it is very good that the main men themselves are making the effort and approaching the uncapped players themselves.
Though it is a pity they can't pay them more official, they will probably pay them unofficialy in terms of other contracts.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals and Pune Warriors have signed up a few uncapped players. Aakash Chopra, Deepak Chahar, Ashok Menaria and Dishant Yagnik, all currently playing for Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy final, have been roped in by Royals. Chopra is a former India opener but he now falls under the ‘uncapped’ category as he last played international cricket five years ago.

Chahar has been a successful fast bowler for Rajasthan in his debut season. It may be recalled that the youngster had picked up 12 wickets on debut in the Ranji opener against Hyderabad. He was being wooed by another side but Royals, apparently, have promised him a place in the playing XI. Hrishikesh Kanitkar, also playing in the Ranji final, is likely to move to Team Kochi.

The Royals have also recruited Ajinkya Rahane. “I am extremely happy to be part of the Rajasthan Royals family. This is testimony to my hard work and efforts put in over the years. Apart from it being a challenging task, it is an experience to share the dressing room and ground space with legends like Rahul Dravid and Shane Warne alongside recent sensations like Shane Watson, Johan Botha and Shaun Tait. The people of Rajasthan love their cricket and I will surely enjoy the company of my Rajasthan teammates,” the Mumbai Ranji player said.

Meanwhile, Team Pune have signed up Kamran Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Abhishek Jhunjhunwala. Also, Mumbai Indians coach Robin Singh and director of coaching TA Sekar were seen talking to a few players at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Tuesday. The duo approached Madhya Pradesh left-arm spinner Ankit Sharma and Mumbai middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav. “Sekar gave Ankit the thumbs-up,” a witness said.

Yadav, too, is close to inking a deal with MI. The right-hander, who made his Ranji Trophy debut against Delhi last month, is highly rated in the city’s cricketing circles. Meanwhile, Mumbai pacer Dhawal Kulkarni is also expected to renew his contract with the Mumbai-based franchise.

..........................

Rajasthan have signed Rahane too .WAG!!!!

Thinking of supporting them now too.
I think Rajasthan can still surprise a lot of people if they can get the cream of the remaining crop ,i.e the uncapped players.
They are as good as those on whom millions were spent in tha auctions.

That doesn't sound like a good thing at all to me. The franchises aren't looking for test match players. What if the players start using these matches as a way to showcase their T20 skills?

Rajasthan not looking so bad. One question - how does Chopra qualify as uncapped?

Should pick up Kanitkar imo.
