Intro to Cricket

In todays WC game between Bangladesh and Australia, they will play only 20 some odd overs. What's the fun in that? Just seems to be a race to who is better in a rather short time. If Bangaldesh' bats are "hot" and Australia sputters, it hardly tells me that Bangladesh is the better team. Why do they use a short game format for the WC?

That's my problem with 20/20 cricket. In that specific circumstance, it was better than not having the game at all and just splitting the points between the two teams. The better team will still generally do better, although the shorter the match, the more luck etc comes into it.

Thats why 20/20 is the devil. 50 over matches rarely produce too many flukes, although that Ireland win was something else.

ireland game wasn't a fluke....they should they have the ability even before...they only lost to england the 1st time by 30 some runs and then they had South Africa the # 1 team in 98/8 in the warms and so i dont think its a fluke...they just need more experience to know how to finish off games...

So then after the World Cup, what's the next major "Test"? Is there a "Test" competition (where more than two teams go at it)?

LA ICE-E

no not really...test is played in series and there's a championship table where after each year the top team wins and they get the trophy and money...

Lets just see how many matches they win in the super 8 and then we'll talk.

they dont have to win anything...they dont need to prove anything to anyone...they already proved they can play good cricket...they had SA 98/8 but just messed up because of lack of experience, they tied with zimbabwe on their debut, they beat pakistan and they played a fairly competive match against WI and agianst england they had a chance to win it until the 33rd over of their innings...thats where experience helps...winning doesn't always reflect a side....it could have been that if pakistan went, they would have not won a single match either...

Proving that their victory had been a fluke. I'm not saying that Ireland are not a good team. I'm just saying they are not at the level yet where you would expect them to win a match against any of the top eight teams.

A question about "wickets". I apologize because I think this may have been answered but I went back and did not see it. Does the bowler receive credit for the wicket regardless of how the batman was put out? ex=
1) silentstriker is bowling to richard (he sends a yorker along it's merry way) and pow hits the stumps.
2) Then, he bowls to nightprowler10, nightprowler hits the ball and oz-fan catches and the bails dislodged while nightprowler is outside the crease.
3) next, he bowls to andyc, andyc tips the ball with his bat and the ball has veered back. andyc and the other batsman try to grab a single but before they make it to the crease the ball has returned and the bails dislodged
4) LA ICE is the batsmen, and now he is called for a LBW
5) Neil Pickup hits it deep but Stefano catches it on the fly (on the full correct?) and is out
6) Finally, silentstriker bowls the ball to 16 tins of Spam. The ball is bowled with speed and is not hit, but does not break the wicket and escapes the grasp of the WK. The batsmen try to grab a single but before they return to the crease the bails have been dislodged.

Are all six outs referred to as wickets and all credited to silentstriker?
That's some over

Well, now that I have more or less of a base to build on, what good "newspapers" should I read online. I have figured BBC, SkySports, The Sun, The Mirror, those are English. What good sites do you recommend for Austrailia, India, Pakistan cricket resources? I know of CricInfo, of course here, cricketweb, anything else out there I am missing?
Don't ever read the Sun or the Mirror unless you're shy of bog roll.

For UK cricket, the Independent and the Telegraph are the calls.
The Guardian > The Telegraph
The Guardian* is a left-wing rag, and I've never really read the Independent, good call on the Telegraph, but also, the coverage in the Times is top-notch.#
