Internationals in domestic cricket

Neser made 170 in a recent County game. England seems to have a lot of non English players in their domestic comp. Australian states used to do this but don’t seem to any more. Does CA not allow it nowadays? Is it beneficial or not to a country’s test interests?

I personally believe it’s best for domestic players to test themselves against the elite and therefore support the inclusion of overseas players; in England I’d personally relax the rules quite a bit.

That being said, in Oz there are what, 66 first class slots? Stronger argument to restrict it a bit more in that case I guess.

Nah its still allowed, just doesn’t happen, due to fewer teams and slots. I’m sure they’d also cop it for not letting young players develop enough if they were having lots of international blokes.

Apparently Mason Crane (ENG) played a single game for NSW in 2017 prior to his single test for Australia (ended up 1/193 eek. SCG the legspin graveyard).

He was NSW’s first international player since the 80’s apparently.

I just wonder what Chris Martin's highest score is in club cricket.
It’s not that high. He was a poor batsman in club cricket as well. Very rare example of someone who could not bat at any level yet was international standard as a bowler.

It is very beneficial ..

Local players can learn a lot from international cricketers and in turn international players can maybe earn a bit more money than what they would normally get back at home aswell as practice their skills in a different environment..

Also I think there is evidence that this practice leaves the general game in better health , when West Indies were an elite team they had most of their best players as fixtures in County Cricket ,which in turn helped the game in England and a bigger fan following ..I think Irish players playing in County Cricket , and Afghan players learning Cricket in Pakistan were big reasons why they became Test nations ..so also for the Greater Good of cricket it makes sense.

I remember Ian Botham and Graeme Hick playing for Qld. Neither of them did very well so it was an expensive bust and I don't think they've played any international players since

In my lifetime there has been either two or three genuine overseas players playing for the SACAs depending on how you count things. Andy Flower didn't go that well, Younis Khan did but he only played 3 Shield games or so, Johan Botha technically counts but he had pretty much moved to Australia entirely when he was playing here iirc

Surprised more kiwis don't play in the Shield. I know Hadlee played for Tas and I think Jeff Crowe for SA? Don't know of any others

Edit: just thought of Luke Ronchi, does he count 🤔

We've got our own competition at the same time. Makes perfect sense that it doesn't happen.

Probably already been said but the answer is pretty simple IMO. Yes, it would be beneficial for everyone involved. IF the overseas player involved was of a signficantly decent standard. In Australia's case, only having 6 teams, using a spot for an oversease player might be seen as taking a position of a local and that's a fair point but it's still better to have a player like Viv, Hadlee & Botham did back in the day.

The reason it doesn't happen anymore is the best players, who we would like to have in the Shield to boost competition and give experience to local players, don't really want to. T20 leagues is the obvious reason for this, but even before they came about it didn't really happen anymore because everyone played so much more international cricket than they used to.

The kind of overseas player that would like to play in the Shield is probably barely even good enough to make the standard, if that. So it doesn't really happen. Mason Crane was given a brief run for NSW a few years back but he was not really good enough to make keeping a local player out worthwhile. Probably wasn't in the best 3 spinners available for the state anyway.

Jonathon Trott played for Otago in NZ a few years before he made the England team. Likewise, so did Neil Mallender did for years and years in the 80s and early 90s. Hick also played for Northern Districts.

Growing up in the 1980's, we had quite a few "Internationals" or close to International playing for Tasmania (where I was raised)
Brian Davison,
Franklyn Stephenson
Michael Holding
Patrick Patterson
Roland Butcher (Not so good, hardly made a run the year he was there)
Neil Williams ( Ditto, hardly took a wicket the year he was there)
Richard Ellison ( Got injured)

Others I remember were,
Ken McEwan (WA)
Vic Marks (WA) won the shield
Joel Garner (SA) , one season, I think topped the averages.
Gladstone Small (SA)
Imran Khan (NSW) won the shield the season he played, helped by Lawson, Gilbert, Matthews, Holland, Bennett, (Reasonable attack)

Of course back then, there was little touring, no franchise cricket, a much more gentler period of time.

So Richard Hadlee didn't make an impact to remember?

Australia don't have many overseas players in SS Cricket

I believe that its only because England was the only northern hemisphere country that overseas players were more popular

His name was mentioned in an earlier post, but yes, probably should have mentioned him.
I may not have watched much cricket the year he was there, 1979/80, I was 12.

Joel Garner took 55 @17.74 for South Australia

And in the 70s they had Jack Simmons as captain for several years.

Sean Ervine played some State cricket when he left Zimbabwe.

Johan Botha played as well but I think he had already retired from International cricket.
