1st ODI vs New Zealand

CW took a much changed XI from their World Cup winning side into the first ODI. They won the toss and bowled first.

Playing XI: Heads, REMOVED, Ballich, Dharan, Riley, Clark, Ikram, Winne, Corrin, Noble, Phlegm

Papps made a quick start against Noble, racing to 23 off 20 before Winne came on at first change to have him caught behind. Fleming was much more suspect, and at the start of the ninth over had just 5 from 22 balls. He drove Winne through the covers for four, but the very next ball attempted the same thing to an outswinging delivery that edged to slip. After 10 overs New Zealand were 38/2.

McMillan and Oram attacked, and began to look comfortable against the pacer as they put on 54 over the next 8 overs. Corrin came on and immediately made an impact - McMillan (25 off 23) hooking the legspinner's first ball straight down REMOVED's throat at fine leg.

It did not stop Oram's charge, as the allrounder progressed to a run a ball fifty through the middle overs. Corrin kept things reasonably tight at his end, but Ikram and Clark were unable to do the same. It was only when Noble returned for his second spell did the CWers get some control back, as Oram was bowled for 68 off 64. The score was 166/4 after 30.

After a few quieter overs though, Reeves continued the attack while Sinclair progressed past his fifty. Sinclair departed in the 45th over, for 64 off 89, but the partnership had done plenty of damage with Reeves passing his half century at better than a run a ball. McCullum slapped two fours off the following over, and with three overs remaining the Black Caps had managed 267/5.

CW fought back in the last few overs as wickets tumbled. Noble got rid of Reeves and Franklin in the 48th, and the 49th from Winne saw the end of Gillespie, all bowled. Phlegm trapped McSkimming lbw with the first ball of the final over, but McCullum's was the wicket they needed. The wicketkeeper heaved two fours through midwicket on the final two balls of the innings, and his cameo of 23 off 13 helped lift the visitors up to 285/9.

Er... I did write this report, but something went wrong. The condensed version is we didn't make it, despite a good effort from Heads and Clark. Same old story of batting too slow and not going on with starts for most of you. Sorry about the last-minute post.
