World Cup Group Match vs Canada

CW took a much changed side into their encounter with Canada, as Hing, Dean and Clark came in for Winne, Corrin and Dong. They lost the toss and were put in to bat.

That looked like a mistake as the opening pair played well to get them off to a good start. Initially cautious with the ball moving around, the 50 came up in the 11th over before a welcome acceleration from Heads meant the hundred came up within the first 20.

Heads brought up his 50 from 54 balls, and Narang followed suit a few overs later. A sweet cover drive for four brought up Narang's 50 off 76 balls, and also ended the first half of the innings. CW had cruised to 139/0.

Heads continued to flay the bowling to all parts, but missed out on his century. With the score on 178/0 in the 32nd, he top-edged an Oliver bouncer to the keeper for 98, off 96 deliveries. Ballich continued where the opener had left off, and made a run a ball 30 before inside-egding the legspinner behind.

Ballich and Narang had put on another half-century for the second wicket, and CW were well placed at 231/2 after 39. Narang had fought hard for his 90 off 120, but again an opener missed out on three figures when he ran himself out.

It was a blessing in disguise for CW as they were able to deploy two aggressive batsmen to go for it in the final overs. Dharan (38* off 35) and Spark (27* off 23) put on 64 from the final 7 and their side finished on a round 300/3.

That target looked imposing to begin with, but started to look truly vast when Phlegm and Clark got amongst the Canadian top order. Phlegm was the first to strike, clipping Oliver's off stump in the third over, and struck again in the fifth as Edwards was pinned lbw. Runs were coming at a decent rate, but so were the wickets.

Clark came on at first change with score on 24/2 and Surkari found himself bowled in the allrounder's second over. Clark's fourth over, the twelfth of the innings, saw both Dhillon (lbw for 10) and Horton (bowled for 2) back in the pavilion. When Capone yorked Ian Khan for 6 in the 15th, Canada had been reduced to 69/6.

22-year old Bull was the only Canadian showing much resistance with his run-a-ball 24, but he could only watch from the other end as the spinners cleared up the tail. Mansfield was bowled by Hing for 7, and Mulla got the same from Dean after an over in which the offspinner was hit for two streaky boundaries.

Bull was the ninth man out, reaching 31 off 30 before getting caught leg before by Dean. The next over - the 22nd - Hing got one through Sandher to rattle the stumps, and Canada were dismissed. The bowlers had dumped them out for 110 without even the assistance of a fielder.

CW won by 190 runs

In the other game in our group, India absolutely mullered Bangladesh to leave both of them on 4 points, along with us, but Bangladesh on a terrible NRR. Hence, India go through and Bangladesh don't, which is good for us because points are carried over to the Super 8 stage.

World Cup Super 8 Match vs South Africa

Dong, Corrin and Winne came back for the Super 8s match. Curiously, the CWers were put in to bat on what looked like a batsman's wicket.

Heads failed to take advantage when he edged Pollock's first ball of the match to second slip. Ballich's 8 off 15 did little to help the shaky start, and with Narang seemingly looking to see off the new ball threat, 16/2 turned into a somewhat turgid 31/2 after 10 overs.

Nonetheless the partnership between Narang and Dharan grew into a productive one. with Dharan looking to be the attacker and Narang the anchor against some very accurate South African seam, the pair put on 114 in 25 overs.

It was in the 31st over that the innings went horribly wrong. Dharan went for 64 off 77 when Nel had him trapped lbw, and when Hall and Nel struck to remove Spark and Ikram for single figures, CW had slipped to 146/5.

Winne managed to stick around with Narang to put on 26, but it took another 8 overs out of the game. By the time Winne was bowled by Kallis in the 44th, he had contributed 9 off 29. Corrin's story was shorter but much the same. It was telling that Winne's effort was the third highest score of the innings.

Narang fought a lone hand, and his unbeaten hundred was raised by the penultimate ball of the innings. It had come of 140 balls while his team collapsed around him, and push the total just about into defendable territory. It was 208/8.

It was going to need early wickets to defend, and so the game looked more or less over when Smith and Puttick made their way, largely untroubled, to 74 for no wicket after the first 15. Winne stopped Smith from reaching 50 when he edged behind for 49 off 51, but the damage was done.

Kallis' 23 off 21 balls served to put the game beyond doubt as he added an extra 54 with Puttick. By the time he was out in the 23rd over, only 2.7 runs per over were needed for the remainder of the innings.

Puttick (95* off 136) and Rudolph (40* off 80) were happy to knock off the singles at the necessary pedestrian pace. Rudolph hit the winning runs as South Africa eased to a comfortable win.

World Cup Super 8 Match vs Pakistan

The CWers stuck with the same XI, but changed their order. Dharan was returned to opening while Narang was sent down to 5, as the CWers hoped for more aggression early on and a firefighter lower down. They won the toss and elected to bat on a placid surface.

Dharan's efforts were short lived, making just 3 off 13 balls before Anjum got him out. Heads looked to get his side off to a flier, making 19 from 15, but a top edge spooned up to Razzaq in the covers. Ballich's dismissal, again to Anjum, meant that Narang was in early regardless. Ballich had made his 11 from 29 balls, and the score had limped to 38/3 in the 11th over.

There was to be no firefighting from Narang though, as he could only make 12 before nicking one through to Haider, Anjum putting his side well on top. When Ikram departed for single figures in the following over, CW were staring down the barrell - 58/5 after 16 overs.

It was fortunate, then, that the CWers got a wonderful, timely hundred from Michael Spark. Initially digging in with Winne, Spark hit a flurry of Boundaries off a Shoaib Akhtar over to bring up his fifty from 63 deliveries. Next over he hit a huge six over long on off Saqlain, and though the scoreline did not yet show it, CW were well on top of the bowling.

The 6th wicket partnership was a match-saving 169, made in 30 overs. While the Pakistani bowlers succeeded in tying down Winne - who got to 50 off 76 balls, and had made 70 off 102 by the time Akhtar trapped him lbw - he was very much second fiddle as Spark blasted through to his hundred at better than a run a ball.

Akhtar's death spell was a good one. Full and fast, he got Winne in the 46th over, and in the 48th picked up Corrin as the legspinner edged behind. With Spark mostly stranded at the other end, Akhtar was able to spear his way through the tail. Capone was lbw first ball, before Phlegm and Dong had their stumps shattered in the final over.

Spark was unbeaten on 108, and had led his side to 247 all out.

The Pakistanis started their chase confidently, and Shoaib Khan was the main aggressor as he hit three fours in a row during Phlegm's third over. Phlegm got his man four overs later, an inswinger pinning Khan lbw to break an opening stand of 47.

Capone was then able to put the CWers firmly on top. Taufeeq was castled for 20 off 31, and soon after the the left armer had Younis caught and bowled for 7. Pakistan had slipped from 47/0 to 58/3 after 12 overs.

That dismissal brought Inzamam to the crease, and the Pakistan captain counter-attacked with his run a ball 50. It was a dangerous innings, but unsuccessful as wickets fell at the other end. First Yousuf (17 off 29) was lbw to Winne, and soon after Razzaq (5 off 11) was caught behind off Corrin.

Ikram's second over, the 29th, started with Inzamam hitting a pair of boundaries to reach fifty, before skying one miles into the air to get caught in the deep. Next, Zulqarnain Haider got back on strike, hit a short ball through the off side for four, and then a moment of madness hared down the track, missed and was stumped. The over cost 13 runs but had essentially won CW the game. Despite keeping up with the required rate, Pakistan had next to no chance at 145/7.

Saqlain Mushtaq, having bowled a wicketless spell, completed a dire match when he was lbw for 1 off 12 balls in Corrin's final over. Soon after, Capone was brought back to dismiss the tail. The left armer got his length wrong in the 35th over as Shoaib spanked three full tosses to the boundary, but got his yorkers bang on in the 37th when Shoaib and Ahmed were castled.

The final score was 173 all out, and CW had recorded an impressive win.
