Arjun, any info on Andhra's Opening bowlers? They have been running thru sides regularly and have a very good domestic record.
Nothing I've got. I'll wait till the Delhi match, since HT gives in-depth coverage of the matches they watch. What about papers in Hyderabad or around?

So far:
  • Raina got his century, even as Mohammed Kaif missed his by 12 runs. Newcomer Murtaza, also a medium-pacer, scored 68. Not too many from Chawla (10) and Kumar (19, at a brisk rate once more)
  • The Baroda/Haryana match is getting to be very competitive. Haryana have pinched a two-run first-innings lead and are all out for 210. Baroda at 75/2. Joginder got a quick 50, to add to three wickets. Munaf Patel still can't bat or field or even stay fully fit for a match.
  • The highlight so far: Mumbai are well on course for an innigns victory against Gujarat. Already bundled out for 148, they're at 185/8 now. Ramesh Powar has seven wickets for the match, along with some quick runs scored. None of the Indian batsmen bowled more than three overs in Durban.
  • The 'low-light' of the round: After conceding 449 to relegation contenders Saurashtra, Delhi were all out for 288 and then are at 61/3. Terrible.

WE HAVE A RESULT!!!

Mumbai have won their match against Gujarat by an innings and 159 runs. Ramesh Powar took five wickets and Kulkarni took four, while Abhishek Nair took the one left. Fantastic comeback from a once-champion team struggling for form. There's something the Indian team and also (maybe) the selectors can learn from here.

Jaffer, Tendulkar and Zaheer are due to play for Mumbai in the final round against Maharashtra. With Agarkar set to return in the next round, that will be one strong side.

Jaffer, Kukreja, Sharma, Tendulkar, Muzumdar, Thakker, Samant, Powar, Agarkar, Khan, Hazare

From HT:
  • A century (less one run) partnership for the last wicket by Saurashtra put Delhi on the back foot.
  • Two more catches were dropped in that partnership.
  • Pujara got his century with a second run which happened due to some slip-shod fielding. Bhandari was strolling at extra cover and the ball reached the keeper slowly due to a weak throw.
  • Mention of Ravindra Jadeja's delivery to get Mayank Tehlan– pitched on leg stump, spun sharply and got an edge to keeper.
  • Bhandari had a bad match so far, as the report said his bowlign looked slower than his strides as the Delhi bowlers used the new ball well.

Hazare? Hopefully not. The bowling attack should have Zaheer, Agarkar, Nair, Powar and Kulkarni. Nair can come in for Thakker, while Wilkin Mota is also an option.

Interestingly, you've chosen Kukreja ahead of Mane, when Mane's more experienced, though Kukreja's just got a 50.

Now there's talk of Ishant Sharma going to South Africa. Frankly, the season should end before he gets an international call-up. It's good to give him some international exposure, even on the bench, but he shouldn't miss a match. Disappointing to see him bowl some 36 overs (also Nehra and a just-recovered Bhandari got 25) while Rajat Bhatia just bowled 13 in that match.

I'd say staying fully fit is a bit of a relevant issue.
I'd say you have no idea what I'm talking about. Munaf was mentioned in the middle of the report for the Baroda-Haryana match ... so random.

We have an exciting finish to the UP-TN match. UP are chasing 129 from a minimum of 25 remaining overs on the final day. Kaif and Raina have come out to open the chase.

I have noticed Andhra seamer Doddapaneni Kalyankrishna (ok tell me what is his shorter 1st name?) and he has been in fine form with 25 wickets @ 15, is he any good or just somebody who is having a good season?

It says in his cricinfo profile that he is medium fast, so he must be able to get movement or something to be getting wickets.

Considering he fared quite well in the 05-06 Ranji season, he obviously has some ability. He's not a highly touted prospect AFAIK, but an opportunity in the Duleep Trophy next year may help him get noticed. His opening partner Syed Sahabuddin has done well too, but he isn't regarded as a promising bowler (age perhaps) so Kalyankrishna may be a domestic force and just that. Arjun can provide additional information.

A lot of information I get is from the papers. When the report of the first day of the Delhi/Andhra match comes in HT, I'll tell you what I can catch. Delhi is batting first and HT gives very in-depth coverage, rather than who scored how many runs and who took how many wickets. 'Dodda', if that's his name, has often been overshadowed by the likes of Srinath, Prasad, Balaji, Jesuraj, Vinaykumar, NP Singh and now Sreesanth in the South. He's played for a weaker team and hasn't done anything noteworthy, so he may get a shout if he leads the wicket-tally at the end of the season, or Andhra wins the trophy.

Day 1 Report

While immediate prospects Chopra and Dhawan disappointed for Delhi, young Mayank Tehlan continued his fine season with an unbeaten 91 against Andhra. In the crucial UP-Baroda tie, Raina followed up his fine century in the previous round with a 72 before getting too aggressive and throwing it away against the spinner Pawar. He's certainly reviving his case for selection in the one-dayers against the West Indies. Pathan was expensive but got plenty of bowlers under his belt, while Kaif failed to convert his start. U-19 prospect Tanmay Srivastava made 84 as UP finally moved away from the veterans and fielded a young side; Chawla will be the man to watch tomorrow. Robin Uthappa starred with a blistering 159 against Tamil Nadu and became the first man to 700 runs this season - surely he's one for the future. In the Haryana-Saurashtra fixture, Joginder once again disappointed with only 5 runs, but he's roaring for a call-up - 35 wickets @ 13 in 6 matches this season.

I'll try to keep an update on domestic cricket with regards to the progress of national prospects. Arjun, hopefully you can provide general updates on domestic action and other important news you come across. Even twice per round is good enough.

EDIT: Good work JJ.

Pathan gets mullered in his first game back for Baroda, taking 2-108 from 22. Raina made another half-century for UP in the same game, as did 17-year-old Tanmay Srivastava (who looked really impressive in the U19 series last summer in England). Elsewhere, Mumbai's revival continues against Rajasthan (Solanki, with 77, the only man to pass 12) and Ashok Dinda has four wickets for Bengal.

EDIT: Adharcric has pretty much said anything above anyway.
