Whatever it takes!!!

Full summary of the current round of games in Ranji up there in that link.

Some key things that stood out to me -

1. Umesh Yadav got a 3 fer and hit his customary 6 and is still batting.
2. Lot of ringers for Goa, Arjun Tendulkar went ok.
3. UP, Punjab, Karnataka, and of course Mumbai look the strongest of the sides playing. MP and TN look good too.
4. Many players moving around teams to play in those where they can get the most games - Murugan Ashwin for Chandigarh for example
5. There is a Yuvraj Singh AND a Sahab Yuvraj Singh playing for Railways.
6. The brilliantly named Mohammed Mohammed got a 5 fer and top scored for TN, doing a Aamir Jamal.
7. His seam bowling partner Sandeep Warrier got a 4 fer and made 38, in an amazing 9th wicket partnership. Sandeep got 3 in the 2nd dig too.
8. Gujarat has one more Jadeja playing for them. :)
9. Bishnoi plays for Gujarat and got a 4 fer but was also smashed a bit.
10. Venky Iyer made 89 for MP but has not bowled yet. MP has serious fast bowling talent though, even without Avesh Khan.
11. Umran Malik continues to be expensive showcasing he is just gun barrel straight with no variation to his bowling sideways or vertical.
12. Ishant Sharma and Navdeep Saini opening the bowling for Delhi but they are being curbstomped a bit by unfancied Puducherry so far.

Caught 2 of the live games.. saw the Jharkand opener play a loose drive and nick to the keeper. The quality of the coverage, graphics were all really good. I think they have obviously far fewer cameras for these games than internationals but other than that, the quality of the actual broadcast seems really good. The TN game has some technical issues and they cant get the graphics up and the coverage is looking pretty shabby too, maybe one of their 3 or 4 cameramen did not turn up or something, dunno.

India seem to have pretty good batting talent in reserve but where’s the fast bowling depth ? Other than Arshdeep and Kaverappa is there anyone promising ? IsHan Porel looked good a couple of seasons back but doesn’t seem to have kicked on.

Kaverappa has been pretty bad this round so far. Arshdeep is really the only one who has come through.. Hopefully there will be more. Folks like Mohsin Khan and Yash Dayal are promising.

This kinda eases the path back for Rohit as not just Hardik and SKY but even Rutu is ruled out apparently till the IPL. Kinda sucks for Rutu as he was in line for maybe even a test or two.

Guess this leaves us with the below line-up -

Rohit (c)
Jaiswal
Virat
Tilak
Jitesh (wk)
Rinku
Axar/Washy/Jadeja
D Chahar (hopefully)
Bishnoi/Kuldeep
Arshdeep
Avesh/Mukesh/Prasidh

Today's summary (NOTE - these are just based on cursory scorecard browsing) -

  • Suryash Prabhudesai, Rahul Tripathi have flopped and Arjun Tendulkar underwhelming as Goa stares at innings defeat against Tripura
    • Tripura have their own ringer in captain Wridhiman Saha and he made 97.
  • Andhra Vs Bengal is a first innings lead shootout. Vihari made a 50 but Ranji veteran Ricky Bhui is still there on an unbeaten 100.
  • Mumbai are looking at an innings win even though they only made 250 against Bihar (yes, the one that sent 2 sides to the field)
    • That 12 year old from Bihar has made 19 and 12 in the game, Dube got 6 wickets so far in the game for Mumbai, also made 40.
  • Against Chattisgarh, Assam leading by 3 with 5 wickets in hand going into the last day after following on. Pretty impressive if they draw.
    • Riyan Parag (didnt bowl and made only 8 in 1st dig) is batting on 82 off 40, showing how T20 hitting can be useful in the long format.
  • For Saurashtra, Pujara made 250 and Prerak Mankad made 100 and got a 2 fer so far in the 2nd dig as Jharkand try to avoid innings defeat.
  • Maharashtra beat Manipur by an innings in 3 days. Hitesh Walunj (SLA) got 8 in the game while Ankit Bawne made a 100.
  • Haryana V Rajasthan is rain affected with only 40 overs play possible so far, that too only on the 3rd day. Should be a points shared one.
  • Services Vs Vidharbha seems a close game - Vidharbha need 133 to win on the last day but scores have been middling all game.
    • Umesh picked up another 2 fer after his first innings 3 fer to go with a crucial 32 at the back end of their batting.
    • Vidarbha should win and are 75-25 favorites IMO given their strong batting with ringers like Karun Nair to come.
  • Kerala seem to be holding a very strong UP to a draw here as we go into the last day.
    • UP had a 92 from Rinku Singh, along with 63 from Dhruv Jorel, their keeper and a 44 from Priyam Garg, the former U19 India captain.
    • Sanju Samson is leading Kerala but is batting #7 as a specialist bat for God knows what reason.
    • The actual keeper Vishnu Vinod continues to impress with another 70, and the famous Sachin Baby chipped in with 38.
    • Ankit Rajpoot with a 5 fer for UP and Kuldeep Yadav with a 3 fer as UP flaunt their almost international quality bowling line-up.
    • UP are ahead by 278 runs with 9 wickets in hand going into the last day - will see if they press for full points. They should.
  • Punjab are bravely trying to avoid outright defeat against Karnataka with big runs from IPL talents Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh.
    • Earlier Karnataka put up a huge 1st innings lead thanks to DDP's 190 and Manish Pandey's 120.
    • Arshdeep got a 3fer while Mayank Markhande and Abhishek Sharma went wicketless.
    • V Koushik got a 7fer for Karnataka while the more heralded Kaverappa and Vijaykumar Vyshak were far less impressive.
    • Mayank Agarwal flopped with the bat.
  • In another rain affected game, Railways are 217 runs ahead Vs Chandigarh with 6 first innings wickets in hand going into the last day.
  • TN V Gujarat is probably the game of this round with TN needing 267 runs to win on the last day with 8 wickets in hand.
    • Gujarat were put in to bat and were bowled out for 250. TN seamers Mohammed and Warrier wrecked havoc.
    • Gujarat then blew through the star studded TN batting line-up and had them on the ropes at 119/8.
    • The same two seamers then starred with the bat with a rollicking tailend partnership to get TN a 14 run lead.
    • Ravi Bishnoi got a 4fer while highly thought of Nagwaswalla (left arm seamer) got a 3fer.
    • Gujarat gave a better effort in the 3rd innings with Umang Yadav making 89 and Ripal Patel smashing 81.
    • Ripal Patel is a 140+ seamer who can bat and also made a crucial 27 in the first innings but his bowling is pretty Umran Malik.
    • It should be a ripper of a last day with Sai Sudharshan at the crease and Pradosh Ranjan Paul, Vijay Shankar and Inderjith to come.
  • MP should be looking to wrap up a win with Uttarakhand 7/1 chasing 375 going into the last day.
    • I alluded to their batting stats yesterday but Kulwant Khejroliya and Kumar Kartikeya starred with the ball for MP.
    • MP's batting so good that all they needed off their IPL stars Venky Iyer and Rajat Patidar was some downhill skiing declaration batting.
  • The Himalayan Derby of J&K Vs Himachal Pradesh is heading to a rain affected, points shared draw. Umran Malik still sucks.
  • Baroda should look to wrap up Odisha on the last day with Odisha at 103/1 chasing a target of 432 going into the last day.
  • In the last elite game, Puducherry should look to beat Delhi pretty easily as they only lead by 30 with 2 wickets in hand going into day 4.

Not far off from what I thought. Guess they see Dube as a like-for-like for Hardik as much as it is possible to see it that way. Guessing we will see 3 spinners and 2 seamers for most games given only 3 seamers have been selected.

Rohit
Jaiswal/Gill
Virat
Tilak/Dube
Jitesh / Samson (wk)
Rinku
Washy
Axar
Bishnoi/Kuldeep
Arshdeep
Avesh/Mukesh
