Whatever it takes!!!
Coulda shoulda woulda

Thats on him for not applying himself. A certain West Indies batsman could probably have been a clear #2 behind Bradman if he’d applied himself the way his Indian contemporary did.
Well, he is still 3rd behind Bradman, so not all bad. :p

from the ACS cricket archive (was not allowed to post the links):

Marshall's stats for Hampshire:

210 matches
5847 runs at 25.20, 5 100s, 26 50s, 76 catches
826 wickets at 18.64, 45 5WI, 7 10WM

Hadlee's stats for Notts:

148 matches
5854 runs at 38.76, 11 100s, 29 50s, 105 catches
622 wickets at 14.51, 38 5WI, 5 10WM

The green tops at Notts would have helped Hadlee's bowling average but not his batting average.

This is what stood out for me: Marshall and Hadlee scored almost exactly the same number of runs for their counties, 5847 versus 5854, Hadlee winning by just 7 runs!!!
Those are remarkable numbers for Hadlee.

Side question: where can we find these County stats? Very relevant for 70s and 80s players.

I usually just sneak behind the Cricket Archive paywall and look at their stats for respective teams. Ofc this would include non county matches (e.g vs touring sides) as well.

Google "ACS cricket archive [player's name]" (without the quote marks) then click on the Famous Cricketers link. You will need to dig into the e-book that comes up to find what I did (p. 74 for Marshall and p. 90 and 91 for Hadlee (the two pages for Hadlee offer different perspectives)). I suggest you explore these e-books yourself to discover more as I've probably just scratched the surface here.

Imran the better batsman and already a ATG fast bowler. Astute captain.

Imran clearly for me.

I dont know why people using captaincy to assess the value of a player.

1. Its hard to evaluate
2. Its unfair, because only 10% gets the chance

Style, stardom, attitude.. Etc are better qualifications 😴

Denied,
Its a secret.

Knowingly or unknowingly Everyone use secret formulas to calculate value of a player beyond their actual numbers.
Based 9/10, good work.

2/10, would've been zero if not for mentioning attitude.

Captaincy is subjective as hell, what makes a great captain.

1. Technical / strategic acumen
2. Winning record
3. Inspirational

All 3, some combination of same?

I feel like saying Marshall didn't take batting seriously is a bit redundant when comparing him with Hadlee. Hadlee was notoriously in the same category of openly blasé slogger.
