It was what allegedly happened i.e according to Messrs Warne and Waugh. Whether Waugh and Warne did just that or other things will probably never be known.

They got the benefit of the doubt -- fair enough. However the episode and the subsequent coverup by the ACB didn't paint Australian cricke in a favourable light given that they were the ones who had done much of the finger pointing till then at the Pakistanis.
