Im asking this as Im not that knowledgable about the subject and beacuse I used to watch it on TV when I was younger.

If cricket is the only sport, how big are sports like kabaddi?

Kabbaddi is what little kids play in the alleys when they can't play cricket. I've yet to meet someone who went to see a kabbaddi match on tv or person.

Or, for that matter, hockey.

Hockey used to be really big in some northern states (like Punjab). But lately, its pretty much been cricket.

In the south, some other sports are slightly bigger there, but there is really no competition. In the US, if you combine Football, Basketball and Baseball, you are about halfway there in terms of popularity of cricket. There are a lot of people who aren't interested in sports in the US, but even my mom can tell you the lineup that won the 1983 world cup.

Of course the split shouldn't happen. A truly terrible idea - the sort of thing that should only be raised in the Springbok Club, or the darker corners of Lord's during the 60's & 70's when they objected to their chums in SA being kicked out by those nasty Asian fellows, or by the tiny minority of Asians who tend to view the whole world as a racist western conspiracy.

Where exactly has there been any evidence between England & Pakistan that the 2 cultures can't co-exist? Since the dark days of the 80's and early 90's they've got on perfectly fine. When have there been any serious problem between England and India or SL? Sure there's been spats from time to time, but that's going to happen whoever ytou play. For me, the diversity of style & approach is a big part of international cricket's appeal. No disrespect to anyone, but the game would be considerably less interesting if we only played the nonAsian countries. What sort of English fans would want to have missed players like SRT, Dravid, Kumble, Jayasuria, Murali, W&W, Inzi & Yousuf over the last 15 years? Only the very stupid or those that are so insecure that they can't face the sight of their side meeting superior opponents from time to time.

Hockey is still pretty popular but its not as attractive a career as a cricketers. The money involved, even for international players is peanuts, by any standards.

Or for that matter, Soccer, in many Indian states like Kerala, WB, Goa , is very popular and miles ahead of Cricket or any other sport.

Yup, the southern states...
Err Goa and WB, Jharkhand aren't really southern states. ;) and then in Bihar & UP we play 'gilli-danda', which is our version of cricket.

Gilli-danda is what you play in your back alley when you are six. Its not a professional sport. And its hardly a "version" of cricket. Thats like comparing hide and seek to hockey.

Personally I reckon Aus vs. Eng should be the only teams playing cricket. Screw Asia, no one likes going there, they give white people the runs. No one cares about NZ, SA are racist.. that just about covers them all doesn't it?

Oh wait, West Indies right. Well cricket is dying there anyway so its not even an issue, may as well cut them off too.

That's what the attitude of those favoring a split seems to be. Like I said, very disturbing.
Definitely makes you think. Surprisied by a few posters too.

I split is completely absurd. Cricket is trying to become a more global game. A split would just be a step backwards. I think the ICC itself needs more cricketers running it and a review of various rules which have come into question over the last few years (i think this may alread be happening with people like Gavaskar but I m not sure.) If more cricketers run the game everything should be alright. I split is just out of the question in my opinion

Uhh, the mud flying around from Asia to the rest of the world and vice versa regarding bias/victimisation/we don't like touring your country/your umpires are naff/your elitist/colonial/cheats, thats been going on for about fifty years now?

I certainly would not care and neither would Asia....but in the long term the rest of the world will!

I think you guys are missing the big picture i mean 60 percent of the ICC earnings are through the BCCI. Let's not forget when the English and Australian cricket boards needed money they turned to the BCCI. And this is India alone..........so it will certainly haf a negetive impact on the rest of the world were cricket to split!

Also, how long are you gonna feed on the ashes?
