No, no, no... I think the rookie generation's perfectly accurate...
If each of the countries had all the first class teams play then it'd be ok, but in some countries there is only one or two teams that play. In Australia only Victoria and New South Wales play games.

I'm glad that ICC 2005 will be released. Cricket is rather under-represented as a game. I hope that it will be a worthwhile purchase - I'm especially looking forward to 20/20 :) Like the others, I would be keen on an editor.

Could I just ask whether ICC 2005 will be available commercially in all good (and some bad) gaming shops from Friday 5th August?

Am trying to decide whether or not to buy online...also if I did buy online would the game be shipped on the 5th or would I get it then?

Non server based games (i.e peer to peer probably) good idea. After all, no real reason for the games to on server anyway (other than collation of results for the leagues and ladders). Not like theres loads of data to be transferred.

Kolpak - Great. Stephen Moore / Matt Mason etc.

Worcester would be doing even worse without them (Don't get Tom Moody being hailed as the great white hope - I mean he has been with us years, got us relegated last year - Not like we haven't got the money. Cecil or Duncan normally stump up cash - what has he done to be hailed as a great international coach..damned if I know)

World Cups - Great

Editor - All I can say is, the data set turned out to be pretty damned close to the one I described back in August 2002 (and was summarily shot down for mentioning). Far from impossible to decrypt in 2002. May be the same in 2005 dunno ! :p

Data Update - This is a tough one. What's the betting most counties have a quick dip in the international transfer market with one or two players before the end of the season.

In 2003 Worcs had Shane Lee / Allan Donald / Nante Hayward / Andrew Hall and others all play as overseas players. Some for one first class game only. (May be one more than "sicknote" Akhtar ends up playing for us though - man was I looking forward to him coming, love to see him on the field for a full session one day) 8-)

So Empire boys will have to work hard to get this one just right. Editor would be needed to stop game being out of date between gold pressing and shop release IMO

The database for ICC hasn't been decrypted. All ConvDB does is make use of the decrypt routines within ICC itself. If those functions weren't externally available inside a DLL there would be no ConvDB and no Magpie. If you were the person that described the encryption back in 2002 then that was totally wrong.

Even with the raw database format available there are still several errors and items missing.

The decrypt routines for ICC 2005 will not be made externally linkable so the encryption will have to be properly decrypted if an editor is to become available.

Dan if possible I would like to know if there have been any changes to the game engine.. Because there REALLY needs to be less fours and more sixes..

I don't know how this ratio was worked out but in todays age of cricket it's totaly un-realistic. Now i'm not going to assume making the relevent changes to fix the problem would be an easy task but if it's not to difficult then i would hope It is put as a high priority in improving the realisim of the game.. Not only that it's fun watching a sixes..

It probably won't attrackt any new buyers to the game but old ones like myself will be far more likely to buy the update if this has been changed.

Would like to think this issue has not just been pushed to the side..

Just thought - I doubt that rain interruptions and Duckworth-Lewis calculations have been brought in for one-day games have they??!

I doubt anyone even understands the calculations - let alone incorporate them into a game!

Would be nice if the occasional one-dayer was interrupted or abandoned though - for added realism.

I was, and I sort of was. But i'll concede the point (esspecially as I never did get around to looking at it again - Though on the main database (as opposed to save game) certainly some evidence of import from a relational DBMS - Paradox maybe ?? Don't answer - you'll say no and i'll shrink another 6 inches)

:D

Anyway my wish list :

Balance of Seam/Spin fixed to stop spinners dominating later in game

More 6's scored these days reflected in game. (Tell the yanks - who have a conspiracy theory in Baseball called "ball juicing" - should let them know the same thing has happened in cricket in approximately the same time frame)

20Twenty and other one day trophies incorporated - and named (Regular World Cups etc) with realistic run chases. Seen the CPU block 4 balls out of 6 when needing 10 to win in the last over many many times. When you lose anyway surely they would "hit out or get out"

Up to date database :D

Better overseas development. 15 years in to the game, there really is no point employing overseas players. They are all rubbish compared to the 60+ average batsmen and 20- average bowlers your team is already full of

Easier access to user defined field settings (hot key maybe)

International "Friendly" games counting in first class averages - In the real world they are almost always first class games - Australia V Leicestershire yesterday for instance

Anything that adds personality to the players - correct hair/skin colour - Left arm bowlers who don't bowl around the wicket when you ask them to bowl over the wicket

RF bowlers becoming RFM after the age of 32, and maybe RMF if they are still playing at 36 (but developing swing and seam skills maybe)

Better youth system. (rather than random allocation - never really noticed much difference on the quality of young player I get regardless of how much I spend. Often use the option of waiting till the first round proper and picking up someone elses draft players anyway)

Maybe actually spend money on a named youth coach (Mr "I must be international - I got Worcestershire demoted" Moody could be the red herring coach)
Again - never noticed much improvement using the "Technique" training. Usually results in such a big drop in form that the player struggles to get out of the 2nd XI

Well that's me done. If just some of these occur, I'll get the game (in fact I'll get it anyway just to show support - having had every other ICC game since they started)

Nice post!!

I had one of the first ICC games, but its a bit vague these days.

Can you choose to bowl over/around the wicket in ICC2005 (or 2002 for that matter?)

How many fielding positions can you define, i.e. how many files? (I know there are 11 players per team :D )

How long have you been able to choose the length?

in ICC 2002, and i assume 2005, you can bowl round or over the wicket, short, full or good lengths, leg, middle, off or outside off (i think) lines. You can save pretty much an unlimited number of fields. They are saved under 4 seperate categories: Fast bowlers, Off spin, leg-spin, SLA. Hope that answers your questions.

ICC 2002 would be worth buying if 2005 wasn't coming out, as the updated database you can find on these forums is very good.

Thanks for the info, might see if I can pick up ICC2002 on the cheap somewhere, and then get the update.

Hopefully ICC2005 will keep me going for the rest of the summer, until Football Manager 2006 comes out!

I have no problem with people suggesting ideas for improvements as long as they realise (as most do) that development time is limited and not all ideas will get implemented. At this stage no new ideas will get implemented for 2005.

BUT unless you have the source code and the database/fixture layout in front of you please do not presume how easy something is to add. If the changes were as easy as you presume and the developers thought them necessary don't you think they would have been implemented. Personally I think most people are happier tricky features that have been in the series for 3 versions like the spinners dominating ater 20 years have been fixed rather than the naming of a series. And don't get me started on the topic of an editor.

Daniel.
being a software engineer, I think I can say that editing and adding these bits into a game should not be that tough.

AND being a paying customer, I'd expect to pay for something that is more than just "data update" and "patches" . Something that SI Games and other game companies do for free.

Giving a lame excuse of short time turnarounds etc doesn't mean the producers take people for a ride and give them 2002 + data update.

The ideas I've listed down were quite simple, and and if they are not, then I can imagine how poor the coding must have been. Regardless I am not here to complain about the data structures and coding methods applied by the company, rather I just wanted to give my two cents on what would make the game a lot easier.

Funny how you'd like to test my intelligence by replying with that sort of post Dan. 8-)

Oh and if you read my post past the word editor - you'd have seen that I was asking for a fixtures editor so that people can change the fixtures around, make them more compact - with more games and tournaments being played.

Actually SI regularly released new Championship Managers with little more than small changes (ie more media interaction, a few more leagues) and data updates... The big changes all came with entirely new versions.... Theres really not much they can do with ICC without doing a total update... adding 20/20 is a big bonus (because lets face it, not much else has changed in the sport), fixing the world cup has made it more playable, Kolpak players, fixing engine problems (ie spinner dominence).... all this is alot of new stuff, especially considering the team behind it have done it off their own back alongside other work they do, and have actually approached empire to do this, when they had no need to do it other than desire.

As for a fixture editor. well going back to SI and the CM/FM games, yes they had an editor, but editing players is far more easier than creating tournaments to run smoothly in the game.... so i reckon with ICC an editor of that type is far more unlikely. Its a shame Empire (or whoever) have no intent on making an official editor available, because management games have proven to be very popular with fans wanting up to date infomation.... However, SI took a LONG time to include their own editor, only after many very good independant ones had emerged, and shown the company how much fan appeal editors have.... My only hope is that Rockingham have noted this and intend on making one (or making it easy for fans to make one) for their upcoming game.

xixsoside - if you are a software engineer as you claim then you should know that making little changes can have unintended side effects that were totally unexpected. A lot of the changes you wanted would require serious changes to the fixtures details to store all the extra details and there is no internal fixtures editor either. These changes would have needed lots of testing to make sure everything still worked long term. That would have meant others things being left out.

Having a limited development time is not an excuse it is a fact. The developers are not being paid for this work annd are doing it in their spare time so in the time available did the best they could. This is a far more significant update then 2001/2002 was and a lot of people here are more than happy with it. No one is forcing you to buy it so please don't. I have absolutely no financial benefit from sales of ICC 2005 (I haven't yet even been guaranteed a free copy). The work I have done for this release (albeit less than previous years) and posting on this forum are because I want the game to continue. For clarification the other developers aren't being paid for the actual development time but will get paid a royalty rate after all Empires costs have been met. Empire will never fund full time development of the game again due to the costs involved.

As for comments re data structures and coding methods well I didn't design the framework but like any major project given time over to do it again from scratch I'm sure it would have been done differently. But that time is never available. Initially added the networking code was more tricky than I had anticipated due to original design decisions and the framework being designed with no thought of it one day being used to handle network input.

If you release a game (or if you already have point me at it) I hope it is free from defects and the changes that people think are simple really can be done in 5 minutes thanks to your perfect design.

Daniel.

Oh great. Another shiny new veneer placed on top of the same old game, with a fresh new database and flashy gimmicks that mask the real shortcomings. Hopefully some other software house who is actually interested in spending a little bit of time and money develops a far superior game to the ICC series. Frankly, I'd rather play Oli Norwell's game than this one...

xixsoside - I have to defend Dan here. As he says, he and his fellow developers have used their own free time to make this new ICC version and personally I think we should all be very grateful. Ok so the game might not have all the features that we'd like - but then what game ever does?!

The Twenty20, the Kolpak ruling, the spinners fix, the inclusion of Bangladesh and the general data update are more than enough justification for buying the game in my book. You are clearly entitled to your own opinion - but until you are involved in a game which rivals ICC, I don't think you should criticise the work of others.
