Ian Chappell is one annoying old bugger

Why is it understandable to have a huddle DURING the game but not before or after? The concept of a huddle, at least to me, is for the players to get together and display a sort of unity/pride and encourage each other to keep up the good work. I see nothing wrong with it. It’s not abrasive, it’s not showing off your opponents, and it lasted like a minute! There was no reason to have an old-man rant about it like Chappell did.

It's not the biggest deal, so to me the biggest story is why Chappell was so vehement, but it does sort of seem like showboating to me. What's the point of a huddle when you're about to spend 40 minutes in a change room together? Before the game/innings is one thing, you're unifying the team before the job at hand. But what do you say in a huddle after the innings? "Good job, now lets go get those oranges. Kamran don't drop the sandwiches?"

Anyway it should be clear that there are people who think its silly, and people that think it's fine. Obviously Chappell fits into the former category, and he said so on air. Thats just how he does things. Same goes for Afridis celebrations actually. I really find it a bit strange people are getting so worked up over it, particularly people who know how Chappell commentates.

I hope that he takes the last wicket in the final to get us the trophy,does his regular celebration,and then drops his pants with Chappell's puckered face on his buttocks.Ian was one of my favorite commentators when i grew up watching cricket,but his outburst pretty much makes him the last man i want to hear in a commentary box.

If Chappell was one of your favorite commentators I'm surprised you're not a little more philosophical about it. You get it pretty straight with Chappell, and given that there are Pakistan fans who hold the same view as him you can hardly say it's a biased or unreasonable view even if you disagree with it.

That said, short of Ponting hitting 201* (159) against England (or any other Aus victory) that would probably my pick of WC endings

I think TEC's point is that doing it at the start and the end of an innings smacks of trying to make a "public show" of your unity, as it is something that can easily be done in the privacy of the dressing room.

The same thing should be said about Australia's Baggy Green ceremonies then, no?

I think most people would agree (and I've said so a few times in this thread) that it's hardly a big deal. I just personally think huddles are a little silly. I think that's a little silly too because IMO Chappell would have said it about any team, and who the hell cares what he thinks about huddles anyway?

I'm no fan of them myself and if Chappelli had said something similar I'd have had no beef. The trouble is he said something along the lines of "The job's only half done; they want to get back into the changing rooms and prepare" which made him sound rather churlish.

I can't really begin to have a problem with Afridi's celebration, and even if it were against my team I couldn't see it as arrogant at all. He's stood there with his arms and legs spread out and a massive dopey grin on his face because he's just too honestly chuffed with himself to hide it. It's like he's posing to make sure his mum can see him, like a 6-year old who's just successfully jumped off a climbing frame. It's 100% sincerity and enthusiasm, I love it.

So what? That Duss ended up playing a good innings doesn't mean you should have a specialist bat at 7. If he was going to come in it should have been for White.
