Iain O'Brien

tbh when I saw O'Brien bowl in those first 2 (?) matches in 04/05, I didn't think he was all that bad. It's hardly uncommon for a seamer to struggle first up against Australia in decent batting conditions.
I see. Well I didn't watch those matches in 2004/05 and had really just presumed that he'd bowled as diabolically in them as he did in the 2 Tests against SA in 2007/08, as his figures were broadly speaking near enough identical. If he didn't, fair play to him, and if so he was rather unlucky he didn't get another go until said SA series.

I got a text from Heath, who is at McLean Park. He said, and I quote:

"The one to get Gayle was a beauty. You can go on CW and tell them from me that Iaian is a pillar of a man and this year's best bowler. Johnson needs to **** off and learn to'Brien."

Not totally sure what that last sentence means...
 Shot Heath.

Yeah, O'Brien>Johnson.

As I remember our bowlers in that series got it into thier heads that instead of carrying on bowling well after SA collapsed for 206, that we should go around the wicket and bowl short ball after short ball, even when it was obvious it wasn't working. I don't think that helped O'Brilliants or any of the other bowlers figures that much.

This is not correct

When he first played, against Australia in 04/05, he was the quickest he has ever been for the national side. Regularly in the 140s and much less accurate than now.

I think a big part of his success this year is a small REDUCTION in pace, and more accuracy/savvy. I assume he realised merely being sharp-ish wasn't enough at test level.

I'm surprised about that, but I stand corrected.

Was sure I remember him being in the high 120s though.

Na, I recall O'Brien being pretty sharp early in his test career also. He just wasn't anywhere near as accurate. Tended to bowl very short if I remember correctly.

With that action he is obviously a big 'rhythm' bowler. Everything needs to be going in the right place, and with correct timing for his pace to be up and everything else to be on song. He had that yesterday, and he has had that for all of this year. Lets hope he can continue in this vein.

Johnners is better than Obrain

It is stupid to compare Obrain with Johnman. Obrain can take wickets only against West indies. 8-)

Comparing O'Brien to Johnson is laughable.
Someone who keeps getting banned for the same thing over and over... Now that's laughable.

O'Brien on the other hand is fantastic. Top guy, top bowler and one of cricket's great workhorses. Another in the long chain of accurate, economical and occasionally destructive NZ pacers.

I've also got some great photos from the last couple of days of cricket. Might put some up... Maybe an avatar or two in there.

Now now, don't take it too far.

Daym, gotten rather fond of your current one. Will have to save it now methinks.

When I say "regularly in the 140s" I mean he bowled maybe 2 balls an over early in each spell between 140-144kph. No quicker than that, but seemingly a yard quicker than now where he doesn't seem to quite hit 140 at all.

At the end of the day, his action can be ugly if he's taking wickets. Looking good doesn't win you Test matches.
