I think Gooch had a extremly good record along with Sutcliff and Hobbs and Boycott all had very good records.

Unless I have missed the point?

Vaughan in 2003 - 510 runs in 18 innings at 31.87 with 4 fifties.

Other Englishmen in 2003:

Trescothick 771
Flintoff 451
Knight 339
Collingwood 289
Stewart 287

Only 3 times in his last 24 knocks has been dismissed in single figure.

So if he needs runs, what about the rest of the team?
The rest of the team need runs as well.

Four fiftys in 18 innings at only 31 is not very good to look at no matter how you put it.

I was comparing him with others to show that his place in the ODI side is secure, and although we want runs from him, others need more.

Marc how do you come to the conclusion Vaughan is the best opener in test match history?

Hayden averages 52 and Smith averaged 66 coming into this game where he is 80*.

Just wondered what brought you to say "statistically he is the best opener in Test Match history"?

However i dont like the idea of having seperate captains in One dayers and tests
I'm a fan of it, because Test Cricket and ODIs require 2 different types of captaincy. They are 2 different games.

Bazza - it's based on those making 1000+ runs opening the batting - he had the highest average.

Precisely. There is a tried and tested formula regarding one-dayers (even down to field settings).

All the skipper has to think about is the occasional bowling change - and to a certain extent that is pre-planned.

Vaughan's 'laid-back' approach may well fit the one-day game but regarding tests, I'd much prefer the ear-bending approach. I know that I'm already back-tracking but it's all too 'matey' for me. Get in there and read the riot act.

Michael Vaughan was compared to Mike Atheron when he first came into the England side. Is it just me or is anyone else seeing more similarities? Is it being laid back or is it having no ideas and not knowing what you're doing??

I hate to say it, but in the not so distant future we might be about to find out just how good a captain Hussain was!

David Gower was another laid back person while Gooch was more encouraging, I imagine that if Hussain were captain, some players would of had their backsides kicked literally and metaphorically.
