Huge talents who have missed the boat

Apart from the fact Saqlain is an ICL player, and the fact he's really not that good any more... and also the fact that one fingerspinner, never mind two, can never really expect much success in England... Saqlain's England qualification doesn't actually stop him playing for Pakistan again.

If Pakistan offered enough incentive, if he broke his ICL ties, and if that was acceptable to the anti-ICL forces, then he could still play for Pakistan.[/QUOTE'

i don't seen any reason why he couldn't succeed now for pakistan or for england, you don't just lose your talent, and age isn't really a factor, i think maybe injuries and a change in personal circumstance may have sapped his hunger

Whatever it is, he's not that good any more.

Considering how dire Surrey were he didn't do too badly last season - at 31 he should still have plenty to offer - it will be a great pity if he's ICL'd out of the first class game

Yeah, it would, especially as it seems he's no longer that keen to be ICL-ing, and that he was one of Surrey's favourite sons.

However, I imagine he's probably actually a bit older than 31. 34 or 35 would seem more likely.

If he were 35 he made his first class debut at 21 which seems unlikely ............ but I take your point

nearly 32 for the record... and 833 first class wickets :O considering the years he's missed with injury (a couple at least wasn't it?) not a bad innings

depends if you want to include supreme talents who's bodies aren't up to it, he's still around though, read an article yesterday, another knee op, not a serious one, just post season stuff, would love to see him back though

from his cricinfo profile

'In November that year, Kale was the central character in a bribery scandal, when two national selectors accused him of offering money to be picked to the Indian squad.'

hahahaha, there's your answer, although something else may have been going on for him not to be considered more seriously in the first place

He was already 30+ then, should have been in the reckoning way before that.

nearly 32 for the record...
That record is not a reliable one though. In Saqlain's day Pakistan had no birth registration system and Pakistani players' official ages are very often inaccurate.

It's quite conceivable he's at least a couple of years older than his official age.

Simon Jones been mentioned?
A sad family double - Jeff Jones certainly fits the description as well

Not forgetting Alan Jones (no relation) who was eventually awarded his England Cap after years of heavy scoring in County Cricket in 1970 and then had it taken away. Rumour had it that he was forced to return the cap and sweater but he wasn't and he still has them - he just lost his status as a Test Cricketer.

Seems all the harsher now too given that Oz versus the Rest of the World XI actually has test status.

The team he played against was a pretty bloody good one as well

I remember reading an investigation into that rumour not long ago that found it was a myth. Can't be sure though, obviously.
