How do you rate players like VVS Laxman?

honestbharani

Whatever it takes!!!
He sucked against England both home and away for some reason. Think it is really the only hole in his record. Maybe did not bash Sri Lanka as much as the others did, perhaps?

VVS Laxman's last ever FC innings was 120. Makes me happy to know he went off on a good note. Scored it for Hyderabad, the only Ranji team he ever played for. Vihari was playing for Hyderabad in that game, scored 84 and put on a 133 run partnership with VVS. Great stuff.

That same week Jadeja hit his 2nd ever Ranji 300, for Saurashtra vs Gujarat. I'd like to think that he was inspired by Laxman's farewell innings.

One of the last few engineer bods that made it big. Ashwin is the only other elite athlete trapped in an engineers body.
Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath were literally engineers.

Quite a lot of Engineering graduates have played for India, a quick google suggests at least 6 of them!

What about Kumble, Prasanna, Venkat, Srinath, Srikkanth ? Indians love their maths

Laxman was the last of them though, at least until Ashwin became a big deal in Test cricket.

Definitely world class, I'd like my son to play like him but I know he can't 8-) I saw him in the nets in close quarters here whenever India visited NZ. A very sweet guy as well. Amazed at how good a timer of the ball he was. Minimal foot work, all hands and boy the ball raced. You could almost see the trace left by the ball when he struck. Bit like Mark Waugh IMO. Made it look super easy. Should have played lot more one day cricket I thought. For some reason India didn't rate him as a one day player or maybe he didn't fit their plans.

I don't ever remember him going that well in Odis, think also struggled in the middle phase of odis when you had to milk singles, wasnt particularly good at that I felt

^He had the worst knees known to cricket since Martin Crowe so he was never going to be good at ODIs.

Gill has many of VVS' strengths and weaknesses. Impeccable against spin, but stays inside the line to the quicker stuff and drives away from the body. Great hand-eye but remains to be seen how he goes in swinging conditions.

You should believe in your son more.

VVS was a beautiful batsman to watch and unlike a lot of "pretty" players he was best when the chips were down. One of my favourite Indian players without question.
