A really good point, not to add zero minnows.

But yeah, we were apparently quite busy helping to make money for other boards, lol.
Especially Australia. We played 5 series in the 80s vs Australia and 4 were away. Plus the WSC limited overs tournaments.

Not sure how revenues were distributed in the 80s, though I know at least up till the sixties teams would take a portion of the gate revenue. If there was any significant portion of revenue earned by the touring team then the WI board probably made more money from touring Australia than from playing home series. With the prize money on offer, the players almost certainly did. I don't think WI would have been so willing to tour here if they weren't getting something out of it.

With much bigger grounds, it likely the board would have.

The players were believed to be horribly underpaid during that era btw, and even if the board would have benefitted, the local grounds wouldn't have, nor did the money (according to the players) make it down to them, nor into the grassroots of the game or investments into the future.
