Yes it was a desperate declaration because the only way they don't lose the series was a win, a draw wouldn't help them. You'd never set someone 280-odd (or whatever it was) under normal circumstances in those conditions.

Having said that though it was still a pretty big 4th innings chase for Sydney, one of the biggest ever IIRC. Chasing it 2 down made it look easier than it probably was.
