Nari contractor too after nearly losing his life from a Charlie Grifithh ball played first class cricket within 8 months agaisnt Medical advice and despite having a metal plate in his skull.

The selectors refused to select him in tests again, despite him doing decently in first class cricket afraid what might happen if he gets hit again.

Robin Smith was a tough player too.

Most of the guys who played before protection were tougher in general imo. Had to be.

Close would have to be near the top, certainly in terms of the pain he went through. AB a seriously hard **** too, it should be said, where hard = uncompromising and doggedness.

Thanks mate. I do read the cricket books section regularly but I should be reading more of the main site. The quality is usually excellent. I don't feel sleepy and will wake the night out and am waiting for the Oscars to start in a few hours. This should be delicious reading.
Yeah, can't speak highly enough of Martin's writing. Still occasionally re-read this piece.

Justin langer was pretty tough, he has taken some heavy knocks but has always came back fighting.
Many of said knocks were his fault TBF. Had a diabolical technique for playing short deliveries, especially for a WA'n - just let them hit him often enough.

Better than playing at them and getting out TBF.

Oh, fo' sho', but the ideal solution would be just duck or sway out the way like most WA'ns.

Don't think Jones really even knew what he was doing for much of the time.
He knew enough to go back out there when Border suggested he'd get someone tougher, like a QLDer, if he couldn't handle it. Think he was aware of what was happening for the most part, otherwise scoring 200 would have been pretty much impossible.

Heard he was delirious for much of it personally - just batting almost completely on instinct. Think the Border "get a QLDer out here" comment came early on, on about 60 or so - he later said, thankfully, that he repented the comment as he didn't realise how ill Jones was. But it annoyed Jones enough that he put himself through the wringer.
