Good result for England that. Can't see them failing to win the group now, they're so much better equipped to run over Algeria and Slovenia than the US. The US are difficult enough to play against that England can't guarantee victory every time against them, and losing would be so much more disastrous than winning would be positive.

I thoroughly enjoyed the match. It restored my confidence in the world cup and humanity.

Loved the expressions on Beckam's face.

For a change... England's match was enjoyable..
Jamie Carrighar looked terrible on pitch.... Aganist better attack... This defence will get sliced open through the middle.
Robert Green was just Robert Green...

SWP.... Why the hell was he on the pitch..He was terrible through out the match....
They should still get to second round though..

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh loved it. Darling Harbour the place to be without a doubt. So many Americans there, it was an amazing atmosphere. Was on the news, except I think they thought I was a yank, but nvm. Poor Green. Hope to see Hart in for the next one. Or James I guess. Can't believe Joe Cole couldn't get a gig, he's been superb in the warm-ups and I thought could well have been the difference last night in producing a good final ball.

Had a late night last night so my criticism of England was probably unduly harsh.

In truth, the match didnt tell us much that we didnt know

Eng have a few very good players supplemented by some reasonable/average ones

The US arent a bad side at all (criminally underrated by the Brtish press) and a draw doesnt do too much harm to the English

Final ball wasn't alright, some decent stuff mixed with some dross, but i didn't see either of them just fire it out for a goal kick which usually happens. Johnson danced past a few players and had a decent effort on goal. Lennon reached the by-line and pulled a cracker cross out. Shape was fine, not like they ever got caught out down that side defensively. Only time the USA looked like scoring was either straight down the middle or the England left (where it was cut out pretty much).

Best cross of the evening however was by Heskey of all people but Rooney wasn't in the right position.
Like you thought Johnson & Lennon looked OK down the right we had nothing down the left though, felt a bit SWP as he is all right foot and 1 dimensional at the best of times even Cashley looked off it a bit.

When was the last time we had a decent wide player with a left foot? Seem to have been bemoaning the lack of such a player for the last 20 years. The fact that John Barnes, Nick Barmby & Lee Sharpe are coming to mind as our best efforts is a sad reflection.

Agree with think he offers a bit more than Milner or SWP. Also would have liked to have seen Adam Johnson in the squad as he has a left foot and has been prefered by Mancini over SWP towards the end of last season.

The Wheel is Forever
So really the only benefit of winning this group is not having to face Germany (assuming they win) right? After the three games, nothing carries over and it's all single elimination correct?

I've enjoyed both the games I watched so far - surprisingly. Looking forward to watching Brazil, Spain and the Netherlands play, from what people say about them.

And with Dale Steyn carving the West Indies up, this must be a perfect day for you.

Yeah. Although whether you win or lose completely alters your route for the rest of the tournament, and whoever wins the group is also likely to be facing France ahead of Argentina in the quarters. Which can only really be a good thing.

I'm a bit scared to laugh- the last side to win the World Cup drew 1-1 with the USA in the group stages.

I've always maintained that Green is rubbish....

If England want to make progress in this tournament, they need to replace Green with James asap.

Can't wait for tomorrow, pretty excited and a bit nervous as well. I knew before the draw that we'd get the Yanks this WC and I am both looking forward to it and hating it. Know far too many Americans that don't really care about football but will talk massive amounts of ****e if they beat us and if it happens it will be unbearable. Fancy the yanks to do well this year as well, think they have a good squad and definitely capable of springing some surprises in the tournament.

But yeah looking forward to it, and I'm going to be shouting my head off in support of Emile Heskey if he plays, he is a glorious man, I don't care how crap he is. He is a genius. Can't do this sort of thing at CW but on another forum I post at that allows signature images I am rocking these Heskey battle colours:

just look at that face. how can you not love The Whale?
You should be happy, because Heskey was England's best player yesterday....
