Well, that's your standard MO in tournaments, so, yeah.

Does rather boggle the mind you've never once qualified from a group stage when (without checking) I would guess you've made it to more WCs and Euros than Norn Iron and yer Leekists combined.

There's been some bad draws; Euro 92 we had the reigning World champions and European champions in our group, along with what was essentially still the USSR. We've gone out on goal difference in tough groups at the 1974 World Cup (first ever team to be eliminated from a World Cup without losing a game) and Euro 96.

And then there's been some farcical planning; we took only 13 players to the 1954 World Cup (needed to leave space on the plane for SFA officials and their wives who were on a jolly), and packed inappropriate kit (thick wooly kits because Switzerland is obviously going to be cold, right?) and some diabolical results (Iran in 1978, Costa Rica in 1990).

Think Morocco in 98 was a worse result than it looks in retrospect too.

Although I think Mags's Norwayanese rendered the result moot by beating Brazil anyway.

The Norwegians probably being the only serious contender to Scotland's likely title of least achievement for what should be a capable footballing nation. One Euros appearance ever and three world cup qualifications, the last 16 at 1998 their best.

Streaks ahead of the competition in the women's game though.
