Group 1 (Afghanistan, Australia, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland)

straw man

This innings has followed more the pattern of pre-tournament NZ chases. Just get too far behind the rate and leave too much to do. Williamson the culprit, as is blindingly obvious.

In retrospect it was an excellent innings from Buttler on a wicket that isn't dead easy to bat on. We probably took a little too long to assess that spin and off-pace was the go and so let Hales steal a march on us too, before we realized.

So Australia out of the tournament?
I wouldn't go that far. We can't rule out convenient washouts, Sri Lanka beating England or Australia beating Afghanistan by like 120 runs. All could still see Australia qualify. Even Ireland beating NZ isn't completely fanciful even though it's obviously unlikely.
