70s I guess Chappell? Gavaskar's most quality work is 80s (home series against West Indies, tampering series against Imran.) Overall, Gavaskar but close.

I’m curious hypothetically, can you consider someone who scored the 16th most runs in a decade the best bat of that decade? Would be like considering Sanga the best bat of the 2010’s.

It is probably the other Richards who scored the 104th most runs in that decade. Was also never dismissed in tests by any bowler between 1971-79.

Gavasker has the opener tax which which shifts the comparison in his favor. Think I had Chappell top 15 last time. So, close enough but I would have Gavasker ahead everytime in my list.
does the new ball have enough movement in India outside of Eden Gardens for a big opener tax points @capt_Luffy ? on a turner I'd personally rather open than play middle order,

He played equal matches away as well. And while not big, I do except a few dead and a few rank turners, most Indian pitches have something for the new ball on especially Day 1

I give him extra credit for his 76 Windies series and work in Australia and obviously 79 England for that

I will say no where near as tough to open in England or NZ, but not a non factor as well overall. You would prefer to open in most places rather than in the MO from Day 4 onwards though.
