don't think Smith's captaincy even makes up for Crowe's superior batsmenship

Crowe. Rating captaincy is a grey area.
It really is. It's hard to judge, for 1, only one person gets to do it and there's no pass and fail per say, like every other discipline.
Win / loss record has more to do with the team, man management is subjective and then it comes to tactical acumen. It's hard enough to determine what makes a great captain, far less to who the great ones are.

A great team can win without one and a poor team still isn't winning even with one.

Moat teams just select the best player and go from there.

They are very few that actually stand out like Benaud, Taylor, Worrell, Jardine etc.

Graeme Smith is eating up this poll
really don't know why, averages 37 at home without minnows, 39 in Australia and really only has one good knock, 35 in India and has nothing in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, other than England he has nothing while Crowe's away record is very good contextually

Couldn’t be more wrong.

Elaborate.
he averages 41 at home. The overall average is higher than of Crowe so he must be doing something really well to compensate for that home record. The only country where he was a failure was India and an average of 35 is not too shabby for an opener. played 2 tests in SL with two 50s, averaging 45. In pakistain he played 4 tests and averages a respectable 45 with a hundred. 40 in Australia is not terrible. I'd take that record given that he was the MOS in that 2009 tour.

Crowe was a total failure in india, sa, srilanka, and west indies.
